CFP: Econ. History of Rus (Uni. Wisconsin-Madison)

Call for Papers: Summer Workshop on the Economic History and Historical Political Economy of Russia.

The workshop will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 24-25, 2019. Proposals are due December 1, 2018.

Young scholars, including those currently pursuing PhD degrees, are especially encouraged to apply. Interested scholars are also encouraged to attend, even if not on the program. Travel grants and accommodation will be provided for selected graduate students, regardless of proposal status, and for all presenters.

Those interested in presenting should send an abstract and a 3–5 page paper summary by December 1 to events@creeca.wisc.edu. Applicants will be notified of proposal status by January 15, 2019. The deadline for final paper submission is May 1.

CFP: Eu/Eurasian Undergrad Research (Uni. Pittsburgh)

Deadline for Submissions: January 25, 2019

On Friday, April 12, 2019, the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES), the European Studies Center (ESC), and the International Business Center (IBC) at the University of Pittsburgh will sponsor the annual European and Eurasian Undergraduate Research Symposium. Modeled after traditional academic conferences, this event will give students the opportunity to present their research papers on Europe, Russia and/or Eurasia to discussants and an audience. Limited travel grants are available to help defray expenses for accepted participants located outside of the Pittsburgh region. Deadlines:
1) Students must submit applications with 250-300 word abstracts and paper drafts by January 25, 2019.
2) Selected students will be notified by mid-February 2019.
3) Final revised papers are due by March 25, 2019.

Academic Job: Summer Russian Instructor (ASU CLI)

Arizona State University seeks a faculty associate to teach intensive Russian in its 2019 summer Critical Languages Institute. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field by the time of appointment; possess native proficiency in Russian; and have at least one year’s experience teaching Russian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, to candidates with experience teaching independently, and to candidates with high levels of proficiency in English. The successful candidates will teach Russian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for eight weeks and will contribute to cultural programming.

Academic Job: Visiting Prof. Ukrainian Studies (Columbia Uni.)

Visiting Professor in Ukrainian Studies, Open Rank, 2019-2020 (one semester)

Columbia University invites applications for an appointment in Ukrainian studies to be filled at the rank of assistant, associate, or full visiting professor for one semester (fall or spring) in the academic year 2019-2020. Rank commensurate with experience. Ph.D. or equivalent is required. History is the preferred area of research and teaching specialization, but literary/cultural studies and other areas will also be considered. The successful candidate will be appointed in one of the Humanities or Social Science Departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and will teach two courses: a course of broad interest for upper-level undergraduates and a second course for graduate students. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to give one public lecture and to participate in the academic life of the University, including as an affiliate of the Harriman Institute.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, the names of three persons who may be asked to provide a letter of reference, a modest sample (article or book or dissertation chapter) of scholarship, and past teaching evaluations, if available. The letter of application should include a statement indicating which semester the applicant prefers to teach, a short list of possible courses which the applicant might teach, and a description of the applicant’s current research interests.

Where can you find authentic audios and videos? What are the trusted sites for language activities, grammar explanations, pictures and stories? Where can students find additional grammar materials, sources for practicing reading and listening comprehension? What resources can teachers use for professional development?
The presenter will discuss these and many other questions during the presentation on November 20.

Prof. Dev.: Year long Fellowship in Moscow (Alfa Bank)

The Alfa Fellowship is now accepting applications for their 2019-20 year program.

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished international initiative that each year offers up to 18 accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Over the course of the program, fellows complete work placements at leading institutions, attend professional seminars, and receive intensive language training. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend, accommodation, insurance, all program-related travel costs, language training in Russia, and private tutoring in the U.S., U.K., or Germany.

The Alfa Fellowship Program brings young professionals with considerable expertise to Moscow to both experience the Russian work culture and to contribute their knowledge in a professional setting. Fellows’ backgrounds and interests are diverse, but generally lie in the areas of business, economics, journalism, law, public policy or related fields. Fellows are required to have a Master’s degree, at least two years of work experience, a strong interest in Russian and Eurasian affairs, exceptional academic and professional credentials, and proven personal initiative and leadership skills in order to qualify for the program.

Prof. Dev: Wayne Vucinich Fellowship (Stanford)

Call for Applications: Wayne Vucinich Fellowship 

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) at Stanford University invites applications for the Wayne Vucinich Fellowship.

 This is a 12-week residential fellowship to be offered in the period between January 15-June 15, 2019 (actual dates of residence will be determined in consultation with the selected fellow). The fellowship is open to scholars in any discipline whose research focuses on historical or contemporary topics in Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, or Central Asia.  Scholars who have received the PhD within the past five years are eligible to apply. (A PhD in hand is required at the time the residency begins.) Preference will be given to scholars who are residents of countries that fall under the direct purview of the Center: Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

During the fellowship period, the Vucinich Fellow is expected to pursue independent research in residence and to participate actively in the scholarly activities of the Center. The fellow will hold a lecture, seminar, or workshop on their research. The fellow will have access to Stanford University Libraries and the use of a shared work space at the Center.

 The fellowship award funds international travel, health insurance, and a visa, in addition to a $12,000 stipend for living expenses.

A complete application consists of an online application form, a letter of application (including a research project description), a Curriculum Vitae, a writing sample, two letters of recommendation, and a short proposal for a public lecture and/or workshop. Applications will be accepted until November 1, 2018.

The Readers’ Advisory Board of the North American Dostoevsky Society invites members of NADS in good standing to nominate an outstanding graduate-student essay on a Dostoevsky-related topic. (If you are not a member of NADS, you can join at https://dostoevsky.org/). Current M.A. and PhD students are also welcome to nominate their own work, NADS membership not required. The winner of the contest will receive: 1) Free membership in NADS for one year, 2) Free registration at the International Dostoevsky Society Symposium in Boston, July 15-19, 2019 (http://www.bu.edu/wll/dostoevsky-2019/), and 3) a guaranteed spot as a presenter on the NADS-sponsored panel at AATSEEL, 2020.
