Study Abroad: Russian Language Programs (American Councils)

American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for spring 2018 semester Russian language study-abroad programs.

Operating since 1976, American Councils Russian-language programs are conducted in partnership with Moscow International University, the Russian State Pedagogical (Herzen) University in downtown St. Petersburg, the KORA Russian Language Center in Vladimir, and the Al Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty. All American Councils programs are uniquely designed to maximize participants’ language gain by combining intensive, small-group instruction with a rich array of immersion activities to ensure participants break out of the ‘study abroad bubble’ and truly engage with local communities. Experienced resident directors provide 24-hour support and personal guidance to participants throughout their time abroad.

Language Training: Eurasian Regional Language Program (Bryn Mawr College)

American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for the spring 2018 semester Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP).

The American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages spoken in Eurasia. Participants may choose from a wide range of regional languages, including Armenian, Azeri, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Dari, Farsi, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Romanian, Tajiki, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, and Yakut.

The program offers comprehensive, two-day pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C. as well as on-site orientation in each host city; expert university faculty and classrooms of only 1 to 5 participants to maximize individual attention to each learner’s needs; 15-18 hours per week of in-class target language instruction in grammar, phonetics, conversation, culture and area studies;  housing with carefully-vetted host families; U.S. academic credit (administered through Bryn Mawr College); conversation partners who assist U.S. students with language learning; and creative excursions that go beyond typical tourist destinations and offer students new insights into the host country life and culture.

Students admitted to the Eurasian Regional Language Program are eligible to receive financial support from a wide range of sources, including the U.S. Department of State (Title VIII), Boren, FLAS, and the American Councils Study Abroad Scholarship Fund.

Funding Opportunity: 2017 German Chancellor Fellowship for Tomorrow’s Leaders (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation)

Deadline for applications: September 15, 2017

The German Chancellor Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is targeted at university graduates from Brazil, China, India, Russia and the USA, who have already acquired initial leadership experience and are interested in spending a year working on research-based, self-developed projects with a host of their choice in Germany, under the patronage of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Participants must have received a Bachelor’s degree within twelve years of the program start date.

Deadline information: Applications opened on March 15 and will close on September 15. Due to the time-intensive nature of the application, students are encouraged to begin securing host affiliations as early as possible.

Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.

Travel/Study Abroad: Fall 2017 Programs on the Holocaust and Polish-Jewish History (Auschwitz Jewish Center)

The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust and the Auschwitz Jewish Center are pleased to share details for two long-weekend programs in Poland offered by the Auschwitz Jewish Center in Fall 2017. The Auschwitz Jewish Center, affiliated with the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City, offers immersive academic programs on topics related to the Holocaust and Polish-Jewish history year-round. Programs are led by trained staff with advanced degrees in the field and open to participants of all backgrounds.

Program for Students Abroad
October 19 – 22, 2017 
Long-weekend subsidized programs in Kraków since 2010 with a scholarly visit to Auschwitz (Oświęcim) for students studying in Europe, Israel, and the region. Deadline: September 19, 2017.

Graduate Prog.: International Double Degree Master Programme (Higher School of Economics)

This is a new master’s programme. The first intake will be in 2017.

This programme offers the opportunity to study the history of the cultural and intellectual interaction between the East and Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. This process will be examined in all its forms – from the history of cultural relations and reception of traditions to the vulgarization of knowledge and the generation of conflicts.

The programme is a wide-ranging inter-faculty and inter-university project that is unique in its combination of two components. Alongside common courses, future Master’s students will be able to create their own educational programme based on individual interests and objectives.

The International Double Degree Master Programm at the Higher School of Economics, Moscow is a 24-month programme with joint teaching in Cologne, Warsaw, and Moscow (18 months in Moscow + 6 months in Cologne or in Warsaw).

Study Abroad: International Summer School (TU Dresden)

/MATERIALS 4.0: The digitally enabled atom to system revolution/ which
will take place at TU Dresden this year (September 11- 15, 2017).

Innovative materials are a key element for keeping products and industrial processes economically competitive and ecologically sustainable. Modern materials science requires a multi-discipline approach embracing chemistry, physics, engineering, as well as theoretical and numerical modeling. The summer school/MATERIALS 4.0/ will provide an overview of current developments in the ongoing digitalization revolution in materials science and will offer a platform for discussions about future perspectives. Dresden is a cultural capital and a world-leading center for materials research. During the one-week school, 12 renowned researchers will lecture and tutor the small group of students.

The registration is open until July 4th. For excellent PhD students and Postdocs, up to 20 all-inclusive grants (travel support, accommodation, participation) will be available.

Description: The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation awards grants of up to $2,200 each in support of research in the holdings of the Gerald R. Ford Library. A grant defrays travel and living expenses of a research trip to the Ford Library. Overseas applicants are welcome to apply, but they will be responsible for the costs of travel between their home country and North America. The grants only cover travel within North America. Library collections focus on Federal policies, U.S. foreign relations, and national politics in the 1960s and 1970s. There are earlier and later materials depending upon your topic.
