CD Doyle Student Clinic

Mission
The C.D. Doyle Clinic is a student-run free healthcare clinic for the underserved in downtown Austin. Since our inception in 2011, our goal has been to transform the health and well being of our patients by providing access to medical care and social services.

Information
Located across the street from the Austin Recourse Center for the Homeless (the ARCH) in the gymnasium of St. David’s Episcopal Church, the C.D. Doyle Clinic provides care every Sunday from 2-5 PM. The clinic is staffed by of undergraduates, medical students, social work students, family practice residents and attendings, and other variable support staff based on the day (did someone say therapy dogs?).

The clinic is able to provide a level of primary care to their target population, with a scope of practice including: OTC pain management, wound care, prescription management, and primary care or specialist referral. One of the biggest goals of the clinic is to make sure each patient is signed up for the Medical Access Program (MAP) which enables our patients to be seen by a primary care provider in Austin.

For students, the clinic is a great opportunity to practice taking histories, doing physical exams, working through differential diagnoses, presenting to attendings and residents, and working within the flow of a clinic. It also provides a level of mentorship, with time set aside for teaching sessions for every level of learning and plenty of opportunity to shadow older medical students early on during your first year. Students put preferences for shifts and how often they would like to volunteer at clinic at the beginning of each semester, and once students are assigned their shift, they must volunteer or find a replacement from a member of their class.
