  • Book launch for the Expanded Anniversary Edition of Loïc Wacquant’s "Body and Souls"

    October 29, 2021  2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
    https://utexas.zoom.us/j/94408725155

The Urban Ethnography Lab at UT Austin invites you to a book launch for the Expanded Anniversary Edition of Loïc Wacquant’s BODY AND SOUL

In the new expanded edition of this classic ethnography, Wacquant explicates how he deployed Bourdieu's signal concept of habitus as both topic and tool of inquiry on the way to formulating the tenets of "carnal sociology." He retraces the trials and tribulations of his gym mates over the past thirty years and probes what they reveal about the economics of prizefighting, masculinity, love, and the craft of sociology itself. A companion book of historical photo-ethnography will come out in mid-2022 under the title Journey in the Land of Pugs.

    Host

Javier Auyero, University of Texas at Austin.

    Presenters

Mitch Duneier, Princeton University, author of Sidewalk.

Jordanna Matlon, American University, author of A Man Among Other Men: The Crisis of Black Masculinity in Racial Capitalism.

Ashley Mears, Boston University, author of Very Important People.

Loïc Wacquant, University of California, Berkeley, author of The Invention of the "Underclass."
