Buba (2022) follows Jakob Otto, known as Buba, a small-time con artist shaped by a childhood trauma. After his parents die in a car accident, he develops the belief that any happiness in his life must be compensated by something negative. To maintain this “balance,” he and his brother Dante construct a routine that deliberately makes Buba’s life as unpleasant as possible. As adults, the brothers operate petty scams and eventually become involved with a local mafia group, taking on small criminal jobs. This shift intensifies the risks around them while reinforcing Buba’s obsessive need to control outcomes through self-imposed misfortune. The narrative changes when Buba reconnects with Jule, a woman from his past, and develops romantic feelings for her.
