September 15, 2025, Filed Under: Nature WalksSpaziergang am Teich: 14. September 2025 Es war ein äußerst ruhiger Morgen. Bisher sind noch keine Enten aus dem Norden gezogen. (Na ja, keine Überraschung…der Vogelzug hat gerade erst begonnen.) Nur zwei Bindetaucher schon im Brutkleid putzten sich auf dem Wasser und beäugten uns misstrauisch. Die Stars des Tages waren die vielen Libellen. Wir haben insgesamt acht Großlibellenarten gesehen. Die Vögel ließen sich nur schwer erblicken, aber wir konnten drei Reiher entdecken (den Grün-, den Schmuck- und den Silberreiher). Welche Farben seht ihr an den Libellen? Was denkt sich dieser Bindetaucher hier? Oder vielleicht dieser Schmuckreiher?

Compete with each other to be the best Observer in the department. Who do you want to be this semester? Biodiversitätsbestie: most recorded species overall. Aufmerksamste*r Beobachter The most consistent contributor over the academic year. The individual with at least one observation on the most Sunday walks is recognized. Ties will be resolved by highest species count. Fauna-Freak: The most reported species from the Kingdom Animalia Blühende Blume: The most reported species from the Kingdom Plantae Vorjahrsblüher: The most observations from the spring semester walks Who can participate? UT Austin students who participate in the Naturspaziergänge and complete at least one GER course during the academic year 2025-26. How to participate? Come to at least two nature walks! Qualifying walks run (mostly) biweekly on Sundays from 9/14 to 3/29, while the university is in session. See the GroupMe (“UT Naturspaziergänge”) and the department’s social media for specifics. Create an account on iNaturalist.org. Send that user ID and your own name to vdheijden@austin.utexas.edu. You will be added to our own Inaturalist project. Collect images of the plants, animals and fungi that you see on the walks and submit them to iNaturalist using your account. At the conclusion of the contest, create a brief write-up of your observations in German and submit that to vdheijden@austin.utexas.edu by April 1, 2026. Include your username in your submission.
