Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to come to campus to participate?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have changed the way we recruit and enroll participants to comply with social distancing. You can now complete the initial appointment with a UT researcher online, via Zoom! To see if you are eligible, go to Make an Appointment and take the eligibility survey.
What is the purpose of the study?
The UT Austin College Health Study aims to learn about the health of women attending community colleges in Texas. We want to learn about health issues affecting students and gather feedback on health education materials.
Why is this study focused on community college students?
Most research on the health behaviors of college students in the US has focused on four-year university students. However, more than one-third of undergraduates attend community college. Community college is an important educational milestone and pathway to higher education.
Why are only first-year students eligible for the study?
We want to follow students and their community college experience for a full year. First-year students are most likely to have a full year of school ahead of them.
Why is this study only focused on women?
Women experience unique health care needs that we are interested in studying.
Who is conducting the study?
The study is being done by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), a public research university. The study is being conducted in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco, a public research university focused exclusively on health sciences. You can learn more about UCSF at ucsf.edu.

Why will I receive a gift card for participating in the study?
Each component of the study takes some time to complete, and we know students have a lot going on. We value our participants’ time and want to compensate them for their effort. This is very common in research studies and many offer compensation to participants.
Who is providing funding for this study?
The Hewlett Foundation funds this study, including the gift cards given to participants.
