2026 Kenya Needs Assessment Trip InformationFebruary 2, 2026We are pleased to announce plans for an upcoming Spring 2026 Kenya Needs Assessment Trip, building on the work from our Spring 2025 collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross in Kakuma Refugee Camp and the Kalobeyei Settlement. This trip will continue our focus on community-centered engineering solutions in areas such as water, sanitation, waste management, and infrastructure, with opportunities for hands-on fieldwork, needs assessment, and early-stage prototyping alongside local partners. Trip Details: Location: Kakuma Refugee Camp, Nairobi, and Mombasa, Kenya Trip Dates: May 8 – May 23, 2026 Priority Application Deadline: Feb 13 @10:00 pm Initial Deposit: $500 due after acceptance to the trip Eligibility: Incoming HPD students enrolling in Fall 2026 *Interested students are encouraged to review the Spring 2025 Kenya Trip page to learn more about the scope and impact of past trips. New Project AnnouncmentJanuary 28, 2026We are excited to welcome a new project to this year’s cohort: Portable Ultra-Sound Device for Mosquito Larvae Removal. This project focuses on developing a portable ultrasound device that uses 18–30 kHz sound waves to eliminate mosquito larvae in small bodies of water. By targeting mosquito breeding at the larval stage, the project aims to reduce disease transmission and improve water sanitation, particularly in under-resourced refugee camp settings. More details and updates to come as the team starts making progress!
Home ES 225C / ES 225D Humanitarian Product Design (HPD) is a two-course sequence (spring and fall) for engineering undergrads. The course is open to all engineering majors and also other majors such as design, social work, and other science and humanities disciplines. Students work in small interdisciplinary teams to address needs of people in crisis such as refugees, displaced people, and communities in times of emergency. Projects are mentored by a senior officer at the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) who provides guidance throughout the semester. Over the course of two semesters, teams work to research, conduct experiments, and create prototypes while learning about principles of design, project management, and product development. Students have the option (not required) to join a two-week trip to Kenya in May to collaborate with our Kenya Red Cross partners. We will visit refugee camps, speak with residents and aid organizations, and work with our international team to understand needs and to advance the projects. A two-semester commitment and registration in the course is required to participate in the Kenya trip. Go HERE to apply. “HPD is the coolest class I have taken at UT! The projects are such global efforts where you get to work with people all around the world. I got to manage a team of amazing engineers that I know I can count on. I loved getting more project experience outside of my regular degree plan. A must-take class if you have room!”
