Lan Nguyen was the 2024 recipient of the Environmental Engineering Student Leadership award for the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. She was nominated by her mentor, Dr. Mary Jo Kirisits and fellow students for outstanding leadership on campus and in community activities. During her time at UT, Lan led and participated in research projects and organizations like UT Aquaponics and the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers. After graduation, Lan is headed to Duke University to pursue a PhD in Environmental Engineering under Dr. Jeseth Delgado Vela who graduated from UT in 2012 and also did research with Dr. Kirisits!
Our research is focused on the intersection of biology and environmental engineering. Current projects span topics ranging from the development of a novel treatment of Legionella pneumophila to the elucidation of the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
