Counselor Applicants for the 2011 Subiendo Academy Paid Position!

Help students believe in their potential and aspire to lead!

Veronica Vargas Stidvent, Program Director for Subiendo: The Academy for Rising Leaders at the University of Texas at Austin, has asked us to reach out  for help in gathering counselor applicants for the 2011 Subiendo Academy. The position pays $500 and the academy runs June 12th – 16th. Counselors can be graduating seniors, so this position is perfect for students unsure of what their plans are after graduation. Counselors attend 4 leadership lunch trainings in addition to the Hispanic Leadership Summit, where they get to personally interact with local business, political and university leaders. The application will remain open until positions are filled. For information on how to apply as well as more information about the program can be found online at www.subiendoacademy.org

Subiendo: The Academy for Rising Leaders brings to the University outstanding students who have completed their junior year of high school.  These students participate over a five-day (four-night) period in intensive leadership training and community building exercises. Counselors are needed to lead these students through the program. Students learn valuable skills through simulation exercises and classroom training.  Student cohorts analyze policy issues and present solutions in a plenary session.  Last year students also participated in additional activities, including a visit to the state capitol, meeting with business leaders, and recreational networking and team-building exercises. Apply today!

Performances and Free Copies of Robert Schenkkan’s Work

UT alumnus Robert Schenkkan won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play The Kentucky Cycle. He’ll return to Austin to give a presentation in the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007) on Thursday, March 24 at 7PM. Schenkkan will discuss scenes he wrote for the HBO miniseries The Pacific (for which he received two Emmy nominations last year). Live actors will read a scene from Schenkkan’s new play, Docent. The playwright will discuss the differences between writing for the stage and writing for the screen. Honors students who promise to attend the event can claim a copy of The Kentucky Cycle by visiting the Joynes Reading Room. (We have 10 free copies and expect they will go quickly.) This event is free and open to everybody. For more information, contact mvalentine@mail.utexas.edu or call (512) 471-5787.
