European Union Student Conference at Yale – Costs Covered

From February 13 to February 14, 2015, eighty undergraduate and graduate students from US universities will gather at the Yale School of Management to discuss the future of the European Union. There will be five workshops: borders (focused on immigration in the Mediterranean), the transatlantic relationship (focused on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), innovative economy (focused on youth unemployment), democratic participation (focused on the rise of far-right extremism) and identity (focused on social solidarity in Europe). In each workshop, students will develop their visions and strategies together with an EU policy-maker and a distinguished professor with a background in EU studies. At the end of the conference students will present their conclusions to a representative from the European Commission. Furthermore, participants will create a US-based student think tank, through which they will dedicate their creativity, ingenuity and time to build the future of the European Union. Applications are due on October 27 (both undergraduates and graduates) and December 1 (only undergraduates, 2nd round). Please download the application form and apply at www.escatyale.com. Feel free to address any questions toinfo@escatyale.com. Travel costs, food, and accommodation are covered by the conference thanks to the generous support of the European Commission under the Erasmus + programme.

LBJ School: Professor Ussama Makdisi and The Rise of Sectarianism in the Middle East

The Rise of Sectarianism in the Middle East in an Age of Western Hegemony: 1860-2014 with Professor Ussama Makdisi – Oct 2 at 5 PM

The LBJ School of Public Affairs will present “The Rise of Sectarianism in the Middle East in an Age of Western Hegemony: 1860-2014, ” a lecture with Rice University Professor of History Ussama Makdisi, the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University, on Oct. 2 at 5 PM at the LBJ School’s Bass Lecture Hall.

The conventional view of sectarianism in the Middle East is that it reflects age-old, endemic religious tensions, and that it reflects a problem in the region’s adaptation to a secular Western modernity. Sectarianism has often been depicted as a holdover of primordial religious divisions that make up the Middle East. In contrast, this talk suggests that the sectarian crisis in the Middle East has its roots in the nineteenth century Ottoman Empire that sought to adapt to European power and to introduce political equality, and in the post-Ottoman Middle East that has seen a series of Western powers, most recently the United States, dominate the region.

This event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required.

Summer Orientation Advisor Recruitment!

Looking for more than just a summer Job?  Be a Summer Orientation Advisor!

The Orientation Advisor position is a dynamic opportunity where students receive extensive leadership training, have the opportunity to work with new students in groups and individually, gain academic advising skills, write and perform in productions, develop creative media, plan large-scale events, and so much more. These students serve a critical role in helping new students, both freshmen and transfers, transition academically and socially to the University of Texas campus. Orientation is a University partnership, so the recruitment and selection process requires investment from the entire community!

  • Students MUST attend one of the OA Information Sessions to be able to receive an application:

◦                     Tuesday 10/7, 8:30-9:30pm, SSB G1.310

◦                     Wednesday 10/8, 5:30-6:30pm, NOA 1.126

◦                     Sunday, 10/12, 8:30-9:30pm, JES A121A

◦                     Thursday, 10/16, 5:30-6:30pm, GSB 2.126

▪ Required attendance is intentional, because we communicate with students about the level of commitment the experience entails. Students are enrolled in an upper-division course designed specifically for Orientation Advisors and serve on committees in the spring, then work throughout the summer.

Please note: Students from any college and classification are eligible to become an Orientation Advisor.
