Schwarzman Scholarship Info Session

Schwarzman Scholars is a highly-selective, fully-funded international scholarship program designed to prepare future leaders for success in a world where China plays a key global role. Anchored in an 11-month professional Master’s Degree in Global Affairs at Beijing’s prestigious Tsinghua University, the program provides Scholars with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, engage in high-level interactions with Chinese leaders and  visiting speakers, and learn from world-class faculty through a dynamic core curriculum and concentrations in public policy, international studies, or business and economics. The Schwarzman Scholars experience also includes unparalleled opportunities outside of the classroom, including internships, senior mentors, and travel seminars around China.

Playwright and screenwriter David Hare and scholar Deborah E. Lipstadt discuss their work on the 2016 film Denial. The film is based on Lipstadt’s legal battle with David Irving, who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. 

In libel cases, the English legal system places the burden of proof on the defendant, so Lipstadt and her legal team had to prove that the Holocaust occurred.

Accepting Applications for 2017 Co-op/Mitchell Undergraduate Awards

The Provost’s Office is now accepting applications for the 2017 University Co-op/George H. Mitchell Undergraduate Student Awards for Academic Excellence.

Each spring, UT Austin, with the generous support of the University Co-op, recognizes up to five undergraduate students for superior scholarly or creative achievement. Two students receive awards of $2,500 each, two students receive awards of $5,000 each, and one student receives the top award of $12,000.

In addition to the student award, the Provost’s Office provides a concurrent award of half the value of each student’s award to the academic department in which the scholarly work was supervised.

Who can apply for the Mitchell Award?

Nominees must be either a junior or senior currently enrolled at UT Austin or have received their undergraduate degree in December 2016. Students must demonstrate superior scholarly or creative achievement through a notable paper or thesis, research project, creative or artistic endeavor, or other product of the student’s academic work. Submitted work should be finished or close to finished (e.g. a complete draft of a thesis or research paper). Previous Mitchell Award recipients are eligible only if the submitted work is a completely different project. 

How to apply for the Mitchell Award:

The application consists of two parts:

(1) the student must submit an online application with four required supporting documents, and

(2) a UT Austin faculty member must submit a letter of nomination for the student

Both the student application and the faculty nomination, with all their supporting materials, must be received by March 22, 2017.

Startups Want to Hire LAH Students!

Austin is home to some of the greatest startup companies in the world. Are you passionate about entrepreneurship? Looking for an experience you can really brag about? This is your chance to network with exciting startups and learn about their wild internship and full time job opportunities.Startups are known for their energetic culture, fast pace, and big ideas. Working at a startup will require you to wear several hats and assume many impactful roles. Pointless busy work is not their style.

Free Speech Essay Contest

The Department of Philosophy and The BB&T Chair for the Study of Objectivism are excited to announce our annual Free Speech Essay Contest open exclusively to UT undergrads. 

Deadline for submission is March 6, 2017.

All UT undergraduate students are eligible to participate. 

Prizes range from $700-$1500.

The topics this year concern:

   Hate speech

   Classifications of speech

Shakespeare and More Shakespeare

The American Shakespeare Center will be staging a production of Romeo and Juliet on February 25th. Tickets are $10 each, but honors students have an opportunity to receive free tickets to the play and participate in a discussion the night before.

On Friday, February 24th at 5 p.m. in the Joynes Reading Room, James Loehlin will introduce the play and the production, talking about the centrality of Romeo and Juliet to representations of love in Western culture.  He will also consider the range of interpretations the play has occasioned, discuss the American Shakespeare Center production style, and give some ideas about things to watch for in the performance.

Students may reserve their spot in the discussion and claim one of the free tickets by signing up (in person) at the front desk of the Joynes Room, while supplies last.

LAH 102H Writing Fellows Application

Want to be a LAH 102H Writing Fellow for Fall 2017?

(past Writing Fellows also need to apply)

 

Please put in writing: “What you think a good Writing Fellow does and what a student needs from a good tutor.” If you have been a Writing Fellow in the past, please give some of your specific examples.

 

Please turn your application in by Friday, February 24, 2017 in the LAH office.  Writing Fellows are expected to attend LAH 102H every Monday from 4- 5:15 and attend the Writing Fellow meeting immediately after class  from 5:15 – 6 pm.

 

Writing Fellows will have a special opportunity to attend a Writing Workshop, led by Dr. Larry Carver, in Rico, Colorado this summer! The workshop will be July 22nd – July 30th.  LAH will cover your flight to Durango, Colorado, transportation from the airport to Rico, hotel for the entire week, and $30 per day for meals.  Please indicate on your application if you will be available to participate in the workshop.  This is for planning purposes, so only tell us that you’ll be available if you are 100% sure that you are free on those dates. Writing Fellows will not be selected based on their ability to attend the workshop, but they will get priority for participation.

LAH Student Hosts Needed March 3rd. Help LAH out and get free food

We are in need of  LAHers to host (overnight) incoming LAH scholarship candidates on Friday, March 3.

We are bringing in 16 finalists for the Dedman Distinguished Scholarship Recruiting weekend and we need LAHers who live in the Honors Quad (preferably) but other campus dorms are fine,  to host a scholarship finalist.  For hosting you would be able to attend a variety of  fun activities we have planned for Friday  (private tour of  the HRC, interactive activity in the honors quad) but especially attend the Lake Austin Fajita boatride and trip to Amy’s ice cream (FREE FOOD). The idea of the weekend is to make the finalists feel welcome, show off UT, and introduce the finalists to UT’s best and brightest students.  That’s YOU!
Your responsibilities would include hosting a finalist in your dorm after the boatride and trip to Amy’s Friday, March 3rd and to bring your finalist to the LAH Office suite on Saturday, March 4 at least 30 minutes before their scheduled interview time.  You would be welcome to hang out in the LAH suite  on Saturday to meet, greet, and eat as long as you are able.

Texas Parents is now accepting applications for the Family Orientation student staff positions. Their staff equips new Longhorn families with the tools to transition to UT while at Family Orientation.
