Travel Grants for Study Abroad in Latin America

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is now offering a number of travel scholarships to Liberal Arts majors for study abroad in Latin America, both for summer 2018 and for academic year 2018-2019.  For summer 2018, we are offering four $2,500 travel scholarships.  Students must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America this coming summer and return with at least six hours of college credit.  For academic year 2018-2019, we will award six $5,000 travel scholarships for semester-long study abroad in Latin America.  Awardees must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America and return with at least 12 hours of college credit.

Free Speech Essay Contest

The Department of Philosophy and The BB&T Chair for the Study of Objectivism are excited to announce our annual Free Speech Essay Contest open exclusively to UT undgrads. Deadline for submission is Friday, February 23, 2018. All UT undergraduate students are eligible to participate.

Prizes range from $700-$1500.

Jewish Studies Scholarships

The scholarships for students and majors in Jewish Studies are now up and running.  The deadline is not until April 10, 2018.  All awards and scholarships are restricted to students who will be enrolling full-time at UT in fall 2018.
There are scholarships for incoming and current JS majors as well as support for students enrolling in upper-division Jewish Studies courses.
There also new award competitions for any student writing essays and theses on Jewish topics.

Schedule an Interview for T-Time: A Supportive Space for Trans Students

All groups are free and confidential. This group is for anyone who self-identifies as transgender &/or gender non-binary and is seeking a space for self-exploration and support. Topics may include gender identity- including binary and non-binary experiences, transition/post-transition/not-transitioning, impact of transphobia, intersecting identities, self, relationships, family, bodies, sexuality, sex, community, academics, mental health, and general wellness.

All prospective group participants are asked to attend a meeting with the facilitator to provide you with more information and determine if this group would be a good fit for you. Queer Voices is a discussion group from CMHC that meets weekly as a space for queer people to talk about issues that impact our lives, get support, and build community. A major purpose of these meetings is to promote positive mental health in today’s world while juggling the demands of being a student. Come make some delicious s’mores (we are providing the ingredients, including vegan marshmallows) and join us to talk about mental health, self-care tips, and managing stress.

Sanger Learning Center and BeVocal: The Bystander Intervention Initiative of The University of Texas at Austin seek proposals for faculty, staff, and/or student-led workshops and panels for the inaugural Student Educator Forum on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Examples of student educators include Learning Assistants, Tutors, Mentors, Peer Educators, etc. The Student Educator Forum is an opportunity to showcase your professional experience, share your legacy as a student educator, network with other student educators, and help make UT Austin a better place for future generations of students by working to create a culture of care.

Students, faculty, and staff with marginalized and underrepresented identities in gender expression and identity, ethnicity, race, size, national origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, affectional orientation, age, physical and mental abilities, religious beliefs, spiritual identities, and socioeconomic status are encouraged to submit proposals.

The University Writing Center will be offering two free workshops on writing effective forum proposals. The dates and times are below. Both workshops will be held in the PCL Learning Lab 2.

LAH Spring Info Session Ambassadors Needed

I need a few LAHers to volunteer to serve as LAH Student Ambassadors to meet and greet prospective students and their families at the LAH Information Sessions this spring semester. Your responsibilities would be to speak with our guests about your experiences in LAH, UT, dorm life, etc..  basically everything about being a student at UT and in LAH. The sessions begin Monday, January 29  from 10:00-12:00 (first hour is with students and parents, second hour just with parents)  in the LAH  Commons Room and run every Monday and Friday until April 30th (no sessions during Spring Break).   If you can make it for both Mondays and Fridays great! If not, that’s ok as long as I have other student representatives.  You can also sign for the first hour 10:00-10:00  or 11:00-12:00 or stay for both.  Please email me: samorous@austin.utexas.edu if you are interested. Please join us on Thursday, February 1st for a talk with Chris Miller on his new book Putinomics: Power and Money in Resurgent Russia. Dr. Chris Miller is Assistant Professor of International History at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He has previously served as the Associate Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy at Yale, a lecturer at the New Economic School in Moscow, a visiting researcher at the Carnegie Moscow Center, a research associate at the Brookings Institution, and as a fellow at the German Marshall Fund’s Transatlantic Academy. Professional Development Workshop: How to Get an Internship

On Monday, February 14th at 4:30pm in CLA 1.302B, the Clements Center will host a professional development workshop on ‘How to Get an Internship.’ We will convene a panel of experienced professionals to provide tips and strategies to students for applying to summer internships in the fields of national security, international relations, and foreign policy. Fellow UT students will also talk about their experiences with the application process, internship programs, and financial resources.

Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program

Named after Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, educator, college president, and civil rights activist and underwritten by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this competitive program is designed to increase the number of minority students and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating social disparities, who will purse PhDs and subsequent careers in academia.

The Fellowship affords financial support and mentorship that allows students to work on research projects during the academic year, and to pursue full-time research during the summers. The program also allows students to decrease their undergraduate and graduate educational loan obligations.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Sophomore standing (at least 30 credits)
  • GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Plan to pursue a doctoral degree in one of the Mellon-approved

    fields of study

  • A completed application, including a statement of intent to pursue a

    doctoral degree, a letter of recommendation from the prospective mentor, and resume

LAH Creative Writing Prize

Calling all creative writers! LAH is teaming up with Echo Literary Magazine to offer the first LAH Creative Writing Prize.

Starting on January 1st, Echo will be accepting prose submissions that are no longer than 10 pages double spaced (and not already published in another journal). Submitters must be current undergraduates in LAH. The winner(s) will receive a scholarship of up to $2500 and have their work published in the spring edition of Echo!
