There is a new literary prize in honor of distinguished UT history professor Dr. Toyin Falola. The prize is open worldwide to young people age 18-35 who are either born in Africa or have an African parent, and the winner will receive $700. All details are attached. As Dr. Falola’s home institution we were hoping to encourage applicants from UT.
The Humanities Texas Holiday Book Fair is taking place on Saturday, December 7, from 10am–1pm. The book fair will take place at the historic Byrne-Reed House, located at 1410 Rio Grande Street. The event is free and open to the public, with all proceeds from book sales benefitting Texas libraries.
Twenty-three noteworthy authors will visit with the public and sign copies of their latest books, which Humanities Texas will offer for purchase at a discounted price. Available titles include works of fiction and nonfiction, with selections for both adult and youth readers. Free parking will be available in the St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church lot on the northwest corner of 15th and Rio Grande Streets and there will be free coffee and a bake sale of donated and homemade treats.

Teemu Ruskola (Emory University) will deliver a lecture at the Law School, and LBJ School Professor Jamie Galbraith will provide a brief response. Ruskola’s talk is about the history of “Legal Orientalism,” and more: how China has become a global symbol of disregard for human rights, while the United States has positioned itself as the world’s chief exporter of the rule of law. We always leave a lot of time for Q&A and discussion with the audience, especially from students. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments are provided! The Texas Undergraduate Research Journal (Texas URJ) is now accepting manuscript submissions for its 17th volume. We are the official, multidisciplinary research journal of the University of Texas at Austin and operate entirely by student staff. More information about the organization can be found on our website.
Publication in the journal is a unique recognition, and we would like to extend the opportunity to as many students as possible. Our staff would be grateful if we could distribute the following announcement to your students through any email newsletters or listservs that you have access to. We accept original work from any discipline, including research in engineering, sciences, social sciences, and humanities related fields.
