I am excited to announce that the W. Sue Ragle Scholarship application is now open. This scholarship is open to all undergraduate students who are unsure of their major and/or career path and have used any exploratory services (such as career counseling, career coaching, etc.) to help formulate their academic plans. Awards are up to $1000 and will be awarded during the spring semester.

I am reaching out to share SXSW Volunteer Opportunities with your LIberal Arts Honor Program students. The Volunteer program provides the opportunity to attend official parties, concerts, films and take advantage of the entirety of the event. Volunteers will receive their badge depending on hours worked and can choose which Volunteer Crew to work with.

In an era when many women refused to put their writing into print, polymath Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1623–1673) not only insisted on print as the best medium for her drama, philosophy, poetry, and science fiction, but also was meticulously involved in her books’ creation and customization, both during and after the printing process.
As part of the Pforzheimer Lecture Series, Dr. Liza Blake, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, will highlight Cavendish’s work to craft a reputation by carefully managing the distribution of her writing.In addition to sharing her findings about the many ways Cavendish worked to make each book its own unique object—including custom bindings, annotations with “glitter pen,” frontispieces, and materials included only in copies going to distinguished recipients—Blake will argue that focusing on Cavendish and her books has the potential to reorient the fields of early modern book history and textual bibliography.

Dear Leaders of Undergraduate Programs:
British, Irish and Empire Studies offers fellowships to undergraduate students researching projects that involve work in any of the program’s areas of interest – Britain, Ireland, and any part of the present or former British Empire. Grants of up to $500 are available to facilitate research; they may be used for travel to archives and libraries, for procuring digital materials, or for other legitimate research purposes. The grant may also be used to defray the costs of attending a conference to present work. Students writing honors theses are particularly encouraged to apply. Those who have received grants under this program in previous semesters are welcome to apply again.
Students who would like to apply for a BIES fellowship for Spring/Summer 2023 should email the following materials to BIESut@austin.utexas.edu by October 28, 2022. The application should consist of (1) a cover sheet with full name, UT EID, email address, telephone number, title of the project, and the amount requested; (2) a one-page description of the work proposed including details of how and approximately when the fellowship money will be spent; (3) a one- to two-page resume and (4) a brief letter of recommendation from a supporting UT faculty member. If a student is uncertain about whether their plan of research will qualify, please have them contact me in advance at philippa@austin.utexas.edu to discuss it. Applicants will receive a confirmation message when all material has been received.
Successful applicants will receive their fellowship money after completing the research and providing a brief report of their activities and the expenses incurred. The report must be submitted by August 15, 2023. If you have other questions about the fellowship, please contact the BIES staff at Marian.Barber@austin.utexas.edu.

Content: Over a half day Friday and all day Saturday, attendees participate in a faculty-led discussion, a career workshop, student-led activity, student panels, an alumni panel, an admissions and grad funding overview, and generally learn more about opportunities in the fields of public and international affairs. This event also gives attendees the chance to network with other student leaders across Texas.

Of those who apply, about 30 students will be selected to attend. The Bush School will cover travel expenses, overnight lodging, and event meals (pre-pay or reimbursement).
