A Taste of Turkey

Turkey is dynamic and its rich history and culture challenge Western stereotypes of a homogenous Islamic Middle East. This dynamism is evidenced through the struggle to carve out a uniquely Turkish identity after the end of World War I, the effects of Atatürk’s modernizing reforms, and lasting tensions between Islamism and secularism. Turkey’s unique location at the border between Europe and Asia creates a cultural pivot point between East and West. At the same time, Ottoman history is a backdrop for many of Turkey’s living artistic and cultural practices today.

Interested? Register here to learn more about Turkish culture, language, and cuisine at “A Taste of Turkish Delight!”, a 50-minute immersive event open to all UT students on Wednesday, March 30, April 13, and April 20, 2022. All three “A Taste of Turkish Delight!” sessions will be held in the Middle Eastern Studies Reading Room (CAL 516). Each session is limited to 25 students.

Essential Skills Immersion Series: Budgeting

What are the most in-demand skills for today’s job market and the future of work? This event series aims to help students consider this question as they prepare for the careers of today and tomorrow.

Budgeting regularly leads the list of most in-demand skills by employers seeking college-educated candidates in Texas. With that in mind, our inaugural skill series week focuses on budgeting. By participating in these sessions, you will learn about budgeting in the context of work, how to develop budgeting skills, and how to promote your background and experiences to employers seeking candidates with budgeting skills.

All UT Austin undergraduate and graduate students are invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Amanda Gnaedinger has ten years of experience working in politics, including as Legislative Director for the Texas House of Representatives, Staff Attorney at Lone Star Justice Alliance, and Elections Protection Training Manager at Common Cause. Amanda is a double longhorn. She received her B.A. in Rhetoric & Writing and Chinese Language & Literature from UT in 2012 and her JD from UT Law in 2016.

Liberal Arts Honors Cords, pins and Medallions

Honors Day cords and medallions

Based on GPA and eligibility criteria, students are invited to participate in the University Honors Day ceremony. This year the ceremony is April 9, 2022. https://honorsday.utexas.edu/. In the past, we have had cords and/or medallions available to students who were not able to attend the University ceremony. Our office has been transitioning Honors Day cords etc.. to the CoLA Student Division in GEB 2.200, but we might receive some cords to have on hand to give to students who may have missed the April 9th ceremony. The cords are a variation of Orange and White (the pattern differs from year to year, so it’s important to know which year the student qualified for cords), the medallions have the year stamped on them.

Students who are listed as College Scholars receive the Honors Day (orange/white) cords. Students listed as Distinguished College Scholars receive cords and a medallion.

Liberal Arts Honors (College Honors) Cords- Teal and white 

These cords are for students who are graduating with College Honors (aka Liberal Arts Honors and have taken 3 upper-division LAH classes received at least 2 A-s and 1 B and have a 3.5 or higher GPA).College Honors is reflected on a student’s transcript

 

Liberal Arts Honors Scholars- Pins

These pins are for students who were admitted to the LAH program as first year students and have completed the LAH cohort classes, one upper-division LAH class with experiential learning, academic enrichment, and capstone and have at least a 3.25 upon graduation.  This is an internal designation and is not reflected on a student’s transcript.

Liberal Arts Honors Distinguished Scholars-Medallions and (College Honors) Cords 

These medallions and cords are for students who were admitted to the LAH program as first year students and have completed the LAH cohort classes, three upper-division LAH classes, experiential learning, academic enrichment, and capstone and have at least a 3.5 GPA upon graduation. This is an internal designation and not reflected on a student’s transcript, but College Honors will be indicated on the transcript.

 

Humanities majors get red and white cords, and they will be distributed at the thesis symposium.

Careers in Politics Symposium

The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at UT Austin is hosting our annual Careers in Politics symposium this April 9th, in person! Careers in Politics is the University’s premier political, public service, and government job-centric seminar. We work to provide direct access to the biggest names in politics. Speakers will share words of wisdom, offer strategies to help you find your role in the world of politics, and provide guidance as you embark on your career in politics via panels and keynotes.

 

The event will conclude with a catered mixer where attendees are encouraged to meet and network with other students from across Central Texas and the state. This event is capped at 75 attendees to keep conversations intimate and networking manageable. There is a $5 registration fee. Students can register at bit.ly/cip2022.

Sanger Learning Center hiring students for 2022-23

The Sanger Learning Center is hiring student educators for next fall, and we would love for you to share far and wide with your advisees. Applications for most positions are due April 1. We are hiring for Tutors, Peer Academic Coaches, Outreach & Communication Specialists, Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders, and Peer-Led Undergraduate Study (PLUS) Coordinators, and all positions start at $14/hour.

Interested applicants should know that they need not have a perfect academic record to apply—the best student educators tend to be those who can collaborate and empathize with peers and know that all learning is a process. We encourage students from all majors and backgrounds to apply.

A Night with Ethnic and Identity Studies

On Wednesday, March 30th at 5 pm in UTC 3.104, the Senate of College Councils’ Equity and Inclusion Committee will be hosting A Night with Ethnic and Identity Studies. This is a three-part event which aims to encourage current UT students from all colleges to enroll in courses within African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS), Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (MALS), Asian American Studies (AAS), Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS), and Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS). The night will consist of a Q+A panel with students and alumni, mock lectures with professors from each program, and brief info-sessions with program representatives.

We invite everyone to attend this event! However, we highly encourage students who have an interest in adding a major, minor, and/or certificate within AADS, MALS, AAS, NAIS, and WGS to join us. Please RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/RSVP-NWEIS.
