Recruiting 23-24 Community Engagement Student Fellows

The Center for Community Engagement is recruiting for the 2023-2024 class of Volunteer UT Student Fellows.

Volunteer UT Student Fellows will serve as ambassadors between The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) and the 18 colleges and schools across the Forty Acres. Each student fellow will act as a dedicated liaison to two academic units, connecting them with CCE resources to support service learning and community engagement. Fellows will be appointed for one academic year and receive a $1,000 stipend for their service. Additional program details and application information are available on the Center for Community Engagement website

We encourage you to share the attached flyer widely with undergraduate students and student groups affiliated with your college, school, or institute.

University Writing Center: Writing Groups

I’m reaching out today because we are in the process of launching weekly writing groups for the remainder of the spring semester. Austin Culver, who is running one of the groups, mentioned to me that you expressed some interest in helping us spread the word about this program!

I was wondering if you would be able to circulate either our promotional poster (attached) and/or this link to our sign up document here:

Black Brown Dialogues on Policy – Town Hall

**Media Advisory**

AUSTIN, TX – Saturday, March, 11 2023 at 10:00 a.m., Black Brown Dialogues on Policy is
proud to announce its first Virtual Town Hall in partnership with Texas LULAC, the Texas
NAACP, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus
to discuss both the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in Texas

colleges and universities, along with work workforce diversity, and Ethnic Studies policy in K-
12 education in Texas.

The town hall will take place at www.facebook.com/TeamBlackBrown. Featuring a panel of
experts as well as students who will discuss the benefits of DEI programs and how they help
build more inclusive and welcoming communities. The panel will include:
•The Honorable Texas Senator Royce West
•Julia Brookins, Special Projects Administrator, American Historical Association
DEI programs are essential for creating a more equitable society and helping marginalized
groups overcome systemic barriers. However, some lawmakers in Texas have recently
proposed bills that would restrict or eliminate these programs. This virtual town hall meeting
will provide an opportunity for community members, employers, and legislators to learn more
about DEI programs and voice their support for them.

“Consistent with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI), we believe that DEI
programs are critical for building a more just and inclusive society” said Angela Valenzuela,
Ph.D. co-convener of Black Brown Dialogues on Policy about the vital need for these
programs and hiring practices. “We also encourage lawmakers to support Ethnic Studies in
the K-12 curriculum.”

The virtual town hall is free and open to the public. We encourage community members,
university faculty, students, advocates, and lawmakers to attend.

For more information about the town hall meeting, please contact Angela Valenzuela, Ph.D. at
blackbrownpolicy@gmail.com.

WHEN: Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 10:00a.m. CST

HRC Internships and LAH

We at the HRC are thrilled to be relaunching our intern program for the 2023-24 academic year. We’ve got our website and Handshake application up and running, and would like to confirm that LAH can collaborate with us on the program and support interns in the 23-24 academic year.

We are currently discussing the number of interns we’re able to host and whether we’re able to raise the stipend and we expect our Director, Steve Enniss, may wish to coordinate with y’all about that in the future. For now, however, we wanted to get going on the more logistical aspects of promotion of the program and the application process.
