2021 Capital of Texas Undergraduate Research Conference

The Capital of Texas Undergraduate Research Conference (CTURC) is an annual state-wide, interdisciplinary, student- led research conference held at UT Austin by UT Senate of College Councils, the Research Student Advisory Council, and the Texas Undergraduate Research Journal. This year we will be holding the conference virtually in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This will be a two-round virtual conference this semester. Students will record and submit a two-minute video (can be done individually or in teams of up to 4 people) summarizing their research along with an abstract. Videos will be scored by judges and have a chance to be presented during the live portion of the conference.

The video presentations will be shared on the CTURC website. Top scoring projects (in terms of presentation, communication, and impact) will be invited back on February 20, 2021 for a live round to determine overall winners, who will receive prizes.

We are extending the original submission deadline by a week – submissions will now be due on January 29th, 2021 at 11:59 PM, the application can be accessed here. This is an incredible opportunity for students interested in graduate or medical school to present their research in the current pandemic environment, and we sincerely hope that you will share this event with undergraduate students who are involved in research. Writing for Competitive Scholarships Workshop

The Office of Distinguished and Postgraduate Scholarships is hosting writing workshops during the spring 2021 semester.  The workshop is designed for students interested in applying for highly competitive fellowships and post-graduate programs, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge, PD Soros, and others.  The virtual workshop will be held in three sessions over three consecutive weeks.

To enroll in the workshop, students must fill out this application by Friday, January 29, 2021. Space is limited. Students will be notified of their status in a workshop during the first week of February 2021.

UT Meditation Club

If you’re interested in learning how to meditate or are an experienced meditator yourself, you should join the UT Meditation Club!

We meet every Sunday at 2:45pm (CT) using the Zoom link below. We meditate for about 20-30 minutes and then have an optional discussion. We focus on mindfulness meditation but like to mix up the style and length of meditation each week in order to broaden our practices. In the future, we also hope to have guest speakers, go on meditation retreats, and engage in mindful community service. The club is low stress and high reward. Meet new people and make an investment in your mental wellbeing! Beginners welcome!

Join UT Polish Club!

Nathan Silverstein, a Polish American student and member of LAH 2024, is starting a UT Polish Club! In all, the UT Polish Club will be a great way to meet fellow Longhorns, eat amazing food, and learn about Poland’s rich culture.

If you are interested in becoming a member, please fill out this short Google Form and you will get more details soon. Please note: EVERYONE is welcome, whether you are Polish or not!

Also, since this is a new club, many officer positions will be available, including as high as Vice President!

UT Polish Club [virtual] activities include:

  • Guest speakers
  • Discussing Polish politics and current events
  • Celebrating Polish holidays and traditions
  • Polish movie nights
  • Polish sporting-event watch parties
  • Polish TV show clubs
  • Polish book clubs
  • Learning about Polish history

Some ideas for when the pandemic is over are:

  • Cooking delicious Polish food together (pierogis, cheesecake, and doughnuts, oh my!)
  • Attending Polish community events (like Austin’s Bigos Cook-Off, the Austin Polish Film Festival, and visiting Panna Maria (the first Polish settlement in Texas and in the U.S. in general))

Humanities Scholarship

Humanities Student Council is hosting a writing contest and symposium for all LAH students! There will be five scholarship awards with a first-place prize of $1,000. The writing contest deadline is January 31st, 2021. Read here for more information on the contest details:

Immigration Dialogue with Girasol

 Girasol (Spanish for sunflower) is a nonprofit organization in the UT Institute for Child and Family Wellness in the School of Social Work.  Tuesday, November 17 from 5:30-7PM, Girasol is hosting the third installment of the “Immigration Dialogues” series.

For our last Immigration Dialogue of 2020, Social Work Master’s students Alisa Hernández and Sarahí Rojo will join us to present their research on alternatives to immigrant detention. We will discuss existing alternatives, consider ideas for centering mental health in support systems for immigrants, and engage in a creative activity to re-imagine our current immigration system.

Training Objectives:

Girasol’s Immigration Dialogues are held on the third Tuesday of the month as a virtual space for students, mental health professionals, and community members to join together to:

  1. Learn about the detrimental mental health impacts of immigrant detention,
  2. Explore ways to advocate for the end of immigrant detention, and
  3. Re-envision communities without detention that support the wellbeing of all immigrant families.”

Students can register for the event to receive the Zoom link.

The event is a community dialogue open to everyone, but the invitation is especially for students whose research interests revolve around immigrant populations, prison and immigrant detention abolition, and mental health. 

Student Opportunity – Students for Central and Eastern Europe

Students for Central and Eastern Europe is a new advocacy organization dedicated to increasing awareness about political and social issues within Central and Eastern Europe. Our goal is to support activist groups in those regions. We want to use our voices and university resources to empower our fellow global citizens in their fight against political suppression, racism, homophobia, sexism, and other forms of discrimination. In doing so, we hope to forge deeper ties between future leaders of the United States and those of Central and Eastern Europe.
