April 1 Deadline for LAS Scholarships

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is now offering a number of travel scholarships for study abroad in Latin America, both for summer 2013 and for academic year 2013-2014.  For summer 2013, we are offering four to six $2,500 travel scholarships (I will follow up later with confirmation of the numbers we will award); students must attend a degree-granting institution this summer and return with at least six hours of college credit.  For academic year 2013-2014, we will award six $5,000 travel scholarships for semester-long study abroad.  The students must attend degree-granting institutions and return with at least 12 hours of college credit.

Applications and letters of recommendation are due on April 1, 2013, without exception.  Please follow the link to the scholarship portal:

UHC continues to seek Honors Colloquium student mentors

The University Honors Center invites UT Austin students (including those who are graduating this May) to apply for a position as an Honors Colloquium student mentor for the 32nd annual Honors Colloquium, July 17-20, 2013.

The Honors Colloquium is a three-day event that takes place on The University of Texas at Austin campus and is designed to introduce rising high school seniors to life at the university while encouraging them to apply to UT and its honors programs.

Student mentors are a critical component of the Honors Colloquium. They interact with participants, serve as RAs, and provide support for Honors Colloquium programs and activities.

Urdu Placement Exam

All students taking the exam will need to have an official photo identification (UT ID) card with them.  They will also need to bring with them a form that they will receive from Student Testing Services after they have paid the required fees.

DETAILS:

All students who appear for the placement exam will take one exam.  On this exam, if they receive 90% or higher, then they will receive credit (in hours only), for two years of Urdu (Urdu 506, 507, 312K and 312L = 16 hours).  If the students receive a score in the range of 75-89, then they will receive credit (in hours only) for one year of Urdu (Urdu 506 & 507 = 10 hours).  The students will not receive a letter grade for the same exams since we only give letter grades for courses completed in residence at the University of Texas at Austin.  Thus the exam will not have any impact on the students’ GPA. 

CONTENT:

Ninety percent of the exam will require the students to write in the Urdu script.  The exam will include translation exercises (from English to Urdu) as well as Urdu reading comprehension.

Internship in New Economic School, Moscow

The internship will provide:

  • round-trip airfare
  • housing in a dorm
  • a modest stipend for living expenses

You will:

  • work at your internship for a minimum of 4 hours/day

You may:

  • take a language class at Higher School of Economics
  • take a content course at New Economic School
  • participate in all NES events

The first step:

  • provide a personal statement that describes your plan to contribute to NES and develop yourself at NES;
  • provide a current CV;
  • provide at least two letters of reference (of which at least one should be from college faculty).
  • Students whose native language is not English should demonstrate proficiency in English. Some level of Russian is a plus, but is not required.

The New Economic School (www.nes.ru/en/home), located in Moscow, Russia, invites applications for semester-long internships beginning Fall of 2013. Undergraduates are invited to apply starting their junior year.

WHY NES?

Information Session: Thomas Jefferson Center for the Study of Core Texts and Ideas

The Certificate program in Core Texts and Ideas is an integrated sequence of six courses in the great books. It provides an excellent foundation for a major in the liberal arts by introducing students to questions and debates about human nature, ethics, politics, and the meaning of happiness that have shaped western history and the modern world. The Jefferson Scholars Program offers stipends and special events for honors students enrolled in the program. Honors Quiz Bowl on Saturday, April 6

The fourth annual Honors Quiz Bowl will take place on Saturday, April 6 in Mezes from noon until 4 p.m. LAH won last year and we need to keep the tradition going.

The Quiz Bowl Basics:

Honors Quiz Bowl involves 3-person teams from each UT honors program competing against each other to answer professionally written trivia questions spanning almost every academic subject and cultural topic. We welcome multiple teams from each program.

Registration is free, and teams should email me at this address (kayla.oliver@utexas.edu) to sign up. Their email should include:

  • Team members’ names
  • A team name of their choice (ex: “Plan 2 Destroy”)
  • Contact information (email address and phone number) for at least one team member

Texas Undergraduate Law Review

The Texas Undergraduate Law Review is now accepting articles for the second edition that will be published in June. Any undergraduate student attending the University of Texas at Austin is welcome to submit an article, and being published in a journal looks great on a law school application! We require that the submission be from 6 to 12 pages, double-spaced, size 12 font, without graphic materials. You are welcome to use any term papers or portions of your thesis that is related to legal issues. If you are looking for examples, feel free to check out the TULR Monthly that is posted in texasulr.org or Columbia’s ULR –>http://blogs.cuit.columbia.edu/culr/files/2012/12/CULR-Fall-2012-Body.pdf.
