Foot in the Door Auditions 9/7 and 9/8

Foot in the Door with be having fall auditions this week for “Twelve Angry Men” directed by Caleb Britton and Stephanie Donowho and “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” directed by Emily Neie and Zoe White.

Auditions will be on September 7th and 8th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the following locations:

September 7th: WEL 3.502
September 8th: WEL 1.308

Lavender Graduation (Deadline Approaching)

Lavender Graduation will be Wednesday, May 18, from 5 to 7 pm in the Student Activity Center Ballroom. Please join us for this ceremony to honor the achievements of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students.

Also, please help us spread the word about the ceremony to graduating students. Any student who is graduating in May, August or December of 2011 is welcome to participate in the ceremony. Deadline to register to participate in the ceremony is this Friday, May 6, 2011. Go to www.utgsc.com to register!

Rousseau Reading Group Leaders Wanted

LAH is looking for leaders for Rousseau’s Reading Groups 2011. Rousseau’s Reading Groups are book discussions led by LAH students. You may choose any book to discuss. We will ask freshmen LAH students to sign up for discussion groups during summer orientation. Rousseau’s Reading Groups are held during the first three weeks of the Fall semester at any location the leader chooses. Please fill out the application and send it in by May 10th.

LAH Needs Volunteers for Orientation Advising

Help new LAHers pick out their fall classes during summer orientation!

From the week of June 6th through July 11th, we will need volunteers to help out all day on Tuesdays, when students are selecting their classes and on Wednesday mornings, from 9 am – noon in the MEZ computer lab when students are registering.

You can provide valuable insight about professors, classes and workload!

We don’t need you every single week – just sign up for what time you can spare by Wednesday, May 4.  There is a sign up sheet at the LAH front desk.

We will have a training session on Monday, May 9 3:30 – 5 pm, with PIZZA, location TBD.

Glamour Magazine’s 2012 Top 10 College Women Scholarship Competition

Glamour magazine would love to invite your students to apply for our 2012 Top 10 College Women Competition. The contest is open to any woman who will be a full-time junior at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada for the 2011-2012 academic year.

We’re looking for dynamic young women with leadership experience, excellent grades and inspiring goals. We’ll award one grand prize of $20,000 and nine $3,000 prizes. All winners will receive a trip to New York City and recognition in Glamour.

Joynes Reading Room Events (and free books!)

Monday, April 18, 7PM
The major novelist Russell Banks, author of 20 published books including The Sweet Hereafter and Continental Drift, will read from new work. Evan Carton, Professor of English at UT, will interview Banks and moderate questions from the audience. A limited number of free books by Russell Banks are available for honors students. To claim a free book, visit the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007). The books we are giving away are both collections of short stories (The Angel on the Roof and Success Stories). Please only take a book if you are sure you can come to the event Monday night.

Thursday, April 21, 7PM
Nigerian-American novelist and short story writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie will read from and discuss new work. Adichie is author of the bestselling novels Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. She is also the recipient of a presitigious MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.  While supplies last, honors students may claim a free copy of her short story collection The Thing Around Your Neck at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007). Please only take a book if you are certain that you can attend the event Thursday night.

Wednesday, April 27, 7PM
Three top contemporary photographers who use antique photographic techniques (such as daguerrotype and bromoil processes) will show slides of their work and discuss their careers. Dan Burkholder and Jill Skupin Burkholder teach photography in New York. Robb Kendrick lives in Laredo, and is a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine.

Applications for Mortar Board due 4/11

Mortar Board is a selective senior honors society, first established on The University of Texas at Austin’s campus in 1923. Mortar Board invites UT’s top leaders and scholars to apply to join this prestigious organization, a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service.

To be eligible, students must have at least 90 credit hours by the end of the Spring 2011 semester and do not plan on graduating earlier than May 2012. Applications are due April 11, 2011.
