Pinto Carver Essay Contest Deadline January 17

The Pinto Carver Essay Contest – 2012

Such tricks hath strong imagination,
That if it would but apprehend some joy,
It comprehends some bringer of that joy.
Or in the night, imagining some fear,
How easy is a bush supposed a bear!
William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act V, Scene 1
“Disorders of intellect,” answered Imlac, “happen much more often than superficial observers will easily believe.  Perhaps if we speak with rigorous exactness, no human mind is in its right state. There is no man whose imagination does not sometimes predominate over his reason who can regulate his attention wholly by his will, and whose ideas will come and go at his command.”
Samuel Johnson, Rasselas, Chapter 44, “The Dangerous Prevalence of the Imagination”
“As a rule, indeed, grown-up people are fairly correct on matters of fact; it is in the higher gift of imagination that they are so sadly to seek.”
Kenneth Grahame, The Finding of the Princess

“You cannot tell from appearances how things will go. Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse than they are; yet without imagination not much can be done. Those people who are imaginative see many more dangers than perhaps exist; certainly many more than will happen; but then they must also pray to be given that extra courage to carry this far-reaching imagination.”
Winston Churchill, talk at the Harrow School, October 9, 1941

The Topic: Write an essay in which you explore what role, if any, imagination should play in a college education.  Needless to say, the more well developed your thoughts, the more specific your language, the better.

Rwanda Human Rights Delegation – Call for Applications

LAHers have participated in this program in the past and found it a positive experience.

Rwanda Human Rights Delegation for Young Leaders — Winter 2012

Program Location:        Rwanda

Dates:  Dec 28, 2011 – Jan 16, 2012

Program Tuition: $2,250

Application Deadline:   Open Until Filled

Global Youth Connect, an international human rights organization, is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications from young leaders (ages 18-35) for our Winter international human rights delegation to Rwanda.

Our Human Rights Learning and Action delegations are unique, first-hand opportunities to cross cultural boundaries, learn about the daily reality of human rights as experienced in a complex and increasingly globalized world, and to contribute to progressive action.

During this GYC delegation, International participants will join with Rwandan peers in a Learning and Action Community to learn about human rights achievements and challenges in Rwanda (and the world) and to take concrete action steps together to support current and future efforts for human rights protection and promotion, both in Rwanda and abroad.

Through a combination of workshops, site visits, advocacy meetings, and volunteer service with grassroots NGOs, we will learn and act on numerous key human rights issues in Rwanda, including but not limited to: gender and human rights, human rights of children, LGBTI populations, historically marginalized indigenous groups, refugees, domestic workers, poverty reduction, public health, juvenile justice, freedom of expression and the arts.

In advance of and during the delegation, all participants will examine the roots of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and see how its legacy has impacted the country and its people, particularly Rwandan youth, and also how the country is attempting to rebuild today.

Specific information about previous Rwanda delegations can be found at http://www.globalyouthconnect.org/country_rwanda.html

Application Deadline:      OPEN until FILLED

How to Apply:

We invite interested young leaders to apply.  We are looking for participants who are between the ages of 18-35 and who possess U.S. or Canadian citizenship or residency as well as international students studying full-time at a U.S. or Canadian college or university.  Most importantly, applicants should wish to expand their knowledge and understanding of human rights and social justice and to offer hard work, skills, connections, etc. to the work already underway in Rwanda and elsewhere.  Participants will become part of a growing global movement of youth acting together for compassion, human rights and responsibility.

Liberal Arts College Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee

Fellow Liberal Arts Student,
The Liberal Arts College Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee (CTBAC)
was formed last year, out of a Senate of College Councils initiative, to
review the budget and academic priorities of the College of Liberal Arts
and give formal student opinions to the Dean’s office.  We have been hard
at work this year educating ourselves about tuition policy and are aiming
to have our first recommendations out by next week.

Please take a few minutes to fill out a short survey. Your responses will
help us considerably in forming our recommendations:
http://utlac.com/ctbac/survey1/

To check in on what CTBAC is doing, we have a Facebook Fan Page
(http://www.facebook.com/pages/Liberal-Arts-College-Tuition-Budget-Advisory-Committee/161956173856563)
and a Twitter account. Any new information the committee receives will be posted immediately.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to
contact us at any time. Our e-mail is: la.ctbac@gmail.com.

As students, we know how busy you are at this point in the semester, so
we really appreciate you taking the time to give us your input.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Ex Nihilo Call for Papers

Dear Students,

Ex Nihilo, UT’s undergraduate philosophy journal, is announcing a call for papers for publication in the 2012 spring semester. This is a great opportunity for committed students to showcase their philosophical knowledge, writing skills, and to have a chance in being published before entering graduate school or a professional career.

The submission guidelines are as follows:

1. Length: 10-20 pages double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font. We will take submissions of papers over 20 pages, but those will likely be edited for brevity. Nothing over 30 pages, please.

2. Topic: Any philosophical topic of substance is acceptable–however, the paper must be philosophical. Papers written for class are acceptable so long as they are sufficiently self-sustained and insightful.

3. Format: Every paper must include an abstract. In a separate attachment, include the title of your paper, your name, email, and major. Do not include your name or any identifying information in your actual paper.

4. Submission date: All materials must be submitted to ex.nihilo.journal@gmail.com by January 17th.

For more information please contact either Pavel Nitchovski (at pavel.nitchovski@gmail.com) or Susannah Duerr (at susannahduerr@gmail.com)

Advancement Through Education Program

The student-run nonprofit, the Advancement Through Education Program, strives to end the generational cycle of poverty through education. There are two parts to the organization’s mission: It sponsors adult students who are studying for the GED exam and currently is trying to build up a mentor program with at-risk middle students. We are currently looking for students who are interested in getting involved in the organization itself, as well as student mentors who are willing to have a bimonthly commitment to mentoring a middle school student.

Students who are interested can email Olivia Kropf at oliviakropf@gmail.com.

Texas Undergraduate Law Review

We are proud to invite you to participate in the newly founded Texas Undergraduate Law Review.

The Texas Undergraduate Law Review’s purpose will be to help guide and shape the next generation of Texas attorneys by raising awareness and encouraging and facilitating academic discussions of law-related issues on the state, national, and international level. It will also be an opportunity for participants to have a published culmination of their work and research.

The only requirement needed to join the Texas Undergraduate Law Review is that participants be undergraduate students attending an academic institution in the state of Texas. Just as the law deals with almost every aspect of society, so too is the diversity sought after for the review – all majors are encouraged to participate.

We invite any interested students to attend our information session on Monday September 26, 2011 in the Black Box Theater (SAC 2.304) at 6:00pm. During the information session, attendees will learn about the purpose of the law review, leadership positions available, goals for the semester and the year, as well as how to contribute their submissions to the review. Additionally, world-renowned attorney and honorary academic sponsor for the Texas Undergraduate Law Review, Dr. Sarah Weddington, will be addressing attendees on the importance of the discussion of law among undergraduates as we prepare ourselves for our future vocations in the legal field.

You will not want to miss out on this wonderful opportunity to delve into serious academic discussion on the legal issues facing our generation on the national stage. We hope to see you on Monday!

For any questions or concerns please contact Philip Wiseman at wiseman.philip@gmail.com.
