REU Summer 2012 Program: Immigration, Geography, and Race/Ethnicity in the United States

REU Summer 2012 Program
Immigration, Geography, and Race/Ethnicity in the United States
Population Research Center and Department of Sociology, UT-Austin

The Population Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, is hosting the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in Immigration, Geography, and Race/Ethnicity in the U.S. for the summer of 2012. This eight-week summer program, which is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (but also with significant contributions from the UT Population Research Center, Department of Sociology, Graduate School and College of Liberal Arts), offers eight very selective upper-division undergraduate students from both UT-Austin and from around the country the opportunity to study social demography through course work and a mentored research experience with senior PRC graduate students. The program pays for tuition, room and board, and computer expenses. REU students also receive a $4,000 stipend for participation in the program, which allows the selected students to fully concentrate on their REU experience over the 2-month program. Students register for a 3-hour summer course in during the first half of the summer, then dedicate the second half of the summer to their own projects in collaboration with their graduate student mentor and under the overall guidance of the faculty co-directors, Nestor Rodriguez and Rebecca Torres. Student papers are then presented at the fall meeting of the Southern Demographic Association.  Former students from the REU program are now on the faculties of Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Kansas, University of Denver, and more, and currently in social science graduate programs at the Universities of Wisconsin, Chicago, North Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana, California at Los Angeles, and California at Santa Cruz, as well as Stanford University, Texas A&M University, Pennsylvania State University, and more.  This program is specifically geared toward students with junior standing who are seriously thinking about attending graduate school in the social sciences and, particularly, in sociology, demography, or geography.

The 2012 summer REU Program application deadline is February 17, 2012.

See http://www.utexas.edu/cola/centers/prc/training-and-fellowships/undergraduate.php for details about the REU program and the program application, as well as information about other research and training programs of the UT Population Research Center

IE Pre-Grad Internship

Dear UT Undergraduates:

With registration for next semester coming up in a few weeks, let me tell you about an exciting internship course.

Are you thinking about whether graduate school is in your future?  Are you uncertain about what it would be like to be a graduate student and what academic program may be suited best to your interests and career goals?

If your answer to these questions is yes, you may wish to consider undertaking the Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) “Pre-Graduate School Internship.”  This internship is open to students in all UT colleges/schools and departments.  You may earn one, two or three hours of academic credit (CMS 164M/264M/364M) by participating in the internship.

Attached is a flyer describing the Pre-Graduate School Internship.  In addition, you may read more about this program (including FAQ’s, examples of internship activities and an easy to complete internship contract) on the web:

A wonderful UT web feature about this program is at: http://www.utexas.edu/features/2008/ie-2/

If after examining these materials you have questions, please feel free to contact me at: spaj737@uts.cc.utexas.edu

NOTE: Because of the generosity of several UT deans, undergraduates who do their pre-grad internship in programs in the following colleges will be eligible to receive travel grants to help cover part of the cost of attending an academic conference (with their grad mentor)– Law, Public Affairs, Communication, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Pharmacy, Business, Social Work, Education, Natural Sciences, Fine Arts.

Sincerely,

Ex Nihilo Call for Papers

Dear Students,

Ex Nihilo, UT’s undergraduate philosophy journal, is announcing a call for papers for publication in the 2012 spring semester. This is a great opportunity for committed students to showcase their philosophical knowledge, writing skills, and to have a chance in being published before entering graduate school or a professional career.

The submission guidelines are as follows:

1. Length: 10-20 pages double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font. We will take submissions of papers over 20 pages, but those will likely be edited for brevity. Nothing over 30 pages, please.

2. Topic: Any philosophical topic of substance is acceptable–however, the paper must be philosophical. Papers written for class are acceptable so long as they are sufficiently self-sustained and insightful.

3. Format: Every paper must include an abstract. In a separate attachment, include the title of your paper, your name, email, and major. Do not include your name or any identifying information in your actual paper.

4. Submission date: All materials must be submitted to ex.nihilo.journal@gmail.com by January 17th.

For more information please contact either Pavel Nitchovski (at pavel.nitchovski@gmail.com) or Susannah Duerr (at susannahduerr@gmail.com)

Texas Undergraduate Law Review

We are proud to invite you to participate in the newly founded Texas Undergraduate Law Review.

The Texas Undergraduate Law Review’s purpose will be to help guide and shape the next generation of Texas attorneys by raising awareness and encouraging and facilitating academic discussions of law-related issues on the state, national, and international level. It will also be an opportunity for participants to have a published culmination of their work and research.

The only requirement needed to join the Texas Undergraduate Law Review is that participants be undergraduate students attending an academic institution in the state of Texas. Just as the law deals with almost every aspect of society, so too is the diversity sought after for the review – all majors are encouraged to participate.

We invite any interested students to attend our information session on Monday September 26, 2011 in the Black Box Theater (SAC 2.304) at 6:00pm. During the information session, attendees will learn about the purpose of the law review, leadership positions available, goals for the semester and the year, as well as how to contribute their submissions to the review. Additionally, world-renowned attorney and honorary academic sponsor for the Texas Undergraduate Law Review, Dr. Sarah Weddington, will be addressing attendees on the importance of the discussion of law among undergraduates as we prepare ourselves for our future vocations in the legal field.

You will not want to miss out on this wonderful opportunity to delve into serious academic discussion on the legal issues facing our generation on the national stage. We hope to see you on Monday!

For any questions or concerns please contact Philip Wiseman at wiseman.philip@gmail.com.

Join SIFE – Students in Free Enterprise

From LAHer Liuna Fekravar, founding member of the UT chapter of SIFE:

SIFE, an international nonprofit organization that challenges students to use economic concepts in order to develop outreach projects to improve the quality of life and standard of living of those in need. SIFE combines analytical thinking skills with a passion for serving one’s community in an effort to actually solve local problems.

Developing these projects and then competing (the organization competes regionally, nationally, and then internationally every year) requires more than just vocational skills – we are looking to recruit a diverse team of creative, intelligent, and passionate students, traits that I know a number of LAH students hold.

Our website is www.texassife.org and our membership application is due September 11th:  https://spreadsheets.google.com/a/utexas.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dEd6YnZZc09UaWRnSTdPQ043MWxvd1E6MQ

Texas Mock Trial

Dear students,

The Undergraduate Mock Trial Associations is a competitive organization that sends teams to state, regional, and national competitions. This organization has been in existence for over 20 years now. We first registered with the university in 1991. Basically, we study a case and compete against teams from other schools while pretending to be lawyers. We have a lot of fun while learning about courtroom procedures. Our organization allows students interested in law and advocacy to compete in mock trials against other colleges and universities. Participation in mock trial will give students an opportunity to learn from real trial attorneys, strengthen their understanding of the la,w and enhance their public speaking abilities.

If you are interested in learning more then stop by our table on the West Mall. We will be happy to answer any and all of your questions. Please come to our information sessions which will be held on Tuesday, September 6th and Wednesday, September 7th at 7pm in a to be announced location.
The try out packet will be posted on our website, texasmocktrial.org, soon.  Try outs will be Friday September 9th,  Saturday September 10th, and Sunday September 11th in a to be announced location.

Please contact us or come to the information sessions if you are interested. We look forward to seeing you there!
