Liberal Arts Honors Study Abroad Scholarships for Spring 2012

LAH Study Abroad applications for students studying abroad in Spring 2012 are due Nov. 1.

Students studying abroad in Summer 2012 will apply for scholarships during the Spring.

All applications will be considered, but priority will be given to students working on foreign language acquisition.

Students of the World

Applications are open for next year’s Students of the World teams! Looking for a truly extraordinary internship and summer experience? Students of the World (SOW) is a local non-profit here in Austin that connects the creative capacity of college students with organizations around the world, using new media to capture the work they do and the lives they change. This past year’s UT team traveled to Haiti, where they resided for a month, traveling and capturing the stories of various organizations working in areas from micro-finance to mango and coffee farmers to emergency medical care training for doctors and nurses in Port-au-Prince’s largest general hospital. The other teams traveled to Ghana, Uganda, and the West Bank to do similar work with other NGO’s. If you are interested in journalism, photo journalism, photography, documentary film, multi-media storytelling, graphic design, fundraising, non-profit experience, traveling, cultures, language, telling stories, and transformative life experiences– this is definitely the experience for you. UT Semester in LA

If you are passionate about film, television, music or digital arts, and are interested in exploring related careers in the entertainment industry, you may be interested in participating in the UT Semester in Los Angeles Program. Students earn UT in-residence credit, and the program is open to all majors.

• Successfully completed RTF 305 “Intro to Media Studies,” or equivalent, by the semester of participation.

Apply for fall 2012, spring 2013 or summer 2013 in February of 2012. Attend an information this fall to plan ahead.

Glamour Magazine’s 2012 Top 10 College Women Scholarship Competition

Glamour magazine would love to invite your students to apply for our 2012 Top 10 College Women Competition. The contest is open to any woman who will be a full-time junior at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada for the 2011-2012 academic year.

We’re looking for dynamic young women with leadership experience, excellent grades and inspiring goals. We’ll award one grand prize of $20,000 and nine $3,000 prizes. All winners will receive a trip to New York City and recognition in Glamour.

Glamour’s Top 10 College Women Competition

2012-2013 US Fulbright Competition

The 2012-2013 Fulbright U.S. Student competition will open on May 1, 2011.  The Fulbright U.S. Student program is open to graduate students at all levels, undergraduates who will have completed their degree by the beginning of the grant period (for most countries, Sept. 1, 2012) and non-students who hold a bachelor’s degree.  The program is restricted to U.S. citizens.  The grants are for study and research abroad, and are available for most countries.  Grants are awarded for all disciplines, including the sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, and the performing and creative arts.  A number of countries also offer grants for those who wish to serve as English teaching assistants.

An information session for prospective applicants will be presented by an Alumni Ambassador from the Institute of International Education’s Houston office on Tuesday, April 19 from 2:00-3:00 PM in Parlin 201.

Deadlines and Procedures:

1.  Potential applicants must register with us, by sending an email to:  Fulbright@austin.utexas.edu.  The email should give the applicant’s name, contact information, academic status (i.e., undergrad, grad, alumnus), country or region of interest, and area of study or research topic.

2.  The applicant should go to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program website (http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html) for country summaries, information about preparing an application, and, starting May 1, to begin the online application process.

3.  The applicant should also review our campus website: http://www.utexas.edu/student/abroad/funding/fulbright.html

4.  Campus Deadline: The applicant must submit copies of all application materials electronically to our office by September 7. Interviews are tentatively scheduled between September 19 and September 30.  While the deadline for final submission to the national office has not yet been announced, my expectation is that it will be around mid-October.

As a Fulbrighter myself (Brazil, 1990), I can testify to the lifelong value of this extraordinary program, and I am hoping that we can make that experience available to your students as well.

StufSA Mixer

Each semester at StüfSA (Students for Study Abroad) we hold a mixer to connect students who have been abroad with students wanting to go abroad.  This is an excellent time for students to learn about the exciting opportunities study abroad offers from their fellow peers.  The event will take place Wednesday, April 13 from 6-8 p.m. in the SAC Ballroom.  We will be providing free Argentinean food and live Brazilian music.

Also, I wanted to mention our Country Corner program: COUNTRY CORNERSSPRING2011Round2[1] Country Corners are an opportunity for students who are going abroad or are interested in going to learn about some of the cultural specifics and norms of different countries in smaller setting from a StüfSA mentor who has spent time in that country.  I have attached a schedule and instructions on how to RSVP.

Lozano Long Travel Grant Competition

The travel grants, the number of which is still to be determined (last year,
we gave out seven), and which will be awarded at the start of Fall 2011, are
worth $5,000 apiece and are intended for study abroad in Latin America.
Students must attend a degree-granting institution in Latin America and
bring back at least 12 hours of college credit.

Please be aware that, while preference is given to LAS majors, any Liberal
Arts major can apply.  Applications are due March 31, 2011.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants Deadline 4/1

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year. These awards are available to all University of Texas at Austin students, not just Phi Kappa Phi members. Students at The University of Texas at Austin are also eligible for a $500 chapter Study Abroad Grant. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. The University of Texas at Austin chapter was founded in 1962. The society gets its name from the initial letters of the Greek words forming its adopted motto: Philosophía Krateíto Photôn, “Let the love of learning rule humanity.” Phi Kappa Phi awards more than $800,000 annually through graduate and undergraduate scholarships, member and chapter awards, and grants for local and national literacy initiatives. Membership is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of second semester juniors, the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students with a 4.0 GPA. The student must have completed at least seventy-two semester hours of coursework at the University. New members are inducted in the spring semester.
