Bring a wrapped book (new or used)—we will jot down a little bit about the books on notecards and stick it to the outside of the wrapping, then SWAP with other LAHers and take new a book home! Every year, Texas Global awards The First Abroad Scholarship to twenty-five eligible first-year students. Each student receives $3,000 to apply towards any credit-bearing or experiential learning opportunity abroad during the standard fours year of their undergraduate studies at UT Austin, starting in Fall 2023. The deadline to apply for the First Abroad Scholarship this year is Nov. 18, 2022.
The UT Student Research Committee, in collaboration with the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Office of Undergraduate Research, is announcing Research Mentorship and Apprenticeship Program applications for 2023-24. Research-MAP increases access to undergrad research on campus by providing research opportunities to first-time undergraduate researchers, underrepresented students and majors, and students with financial barriers to participating in research.
This program is made up of a cohort of 10-15 students, who each participate in paid research assistantships with a faculty mentor. Students in the program will receive up to $2,000 in research assistantship funding in fall 2023 and $2,000 in spring 2024, and will take part in professional development and research presentation events. Students do not need to already have a research mentor to apply for Research-MAP; accepted students without a faculty mentor will be connected with one through the assistance of an OUR advisor.
Faculty who are interested in the program are invited to fill out this non-binding interest form. More information can be found on the OUR web site.

The Polish Club has officially set a date and time for our third guest speaker of the semester. Former President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski (term: 2010-2015) will be speaking to the Polish Club over Zoom on Friday, November 4, at 12:00pm CT. He will be delivering a speech entitled “Russia’s Use of Energy as a Weapon of War Against Europe.” President Komorowski will be the third Polish President to speak to the club.

I am excited to announce that the W. Sue Ragle Scholarship application is now open. This scholarship is open to all undergraduate students who are unsure of their major and/or career path and have used any exploratory services (such as career counseling, career coaching, etc.) to help formulate their academic plans. In an era when many women refused to put their writing into print, polymath Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1623–1673) not only insisted on print as the best medium for her drama, philosophy, poetry, and science fiction, but also was meticulously involved in her books’ creation and customization, both during and after the printing process.
As part of the Pforzheimer Lecture Series, Dr. Liza Blake, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, will highlight Cavendish’s work to craft a reputation by carefully managing the distribution of her writing.In addition to sharing her findings about the many ways Cavendish worked to make each book its own unique object—including custom bindings, annotations with “glitter pen,” frontispieces, and materials included only in copies going to distinguished recipients—Blake will argue that focusing on Cavendish and her books has the potential to reorient the fields of early modern book history and textual bibliography.
