The Center for Community Engagement is recruiting for the 2023-2024 class of Volunteer UT Student Fellows.

Volunteer UT Student Fellows will serve as ambassadors between The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) and the 18 colleges and schools across the Forty Acres. Each student fellow will act as a dedicated liaison to two academic units, connecting them with CCE resources to support service learning and community engagement. Fellows will be appointed for one academic year and receive a $1,000 stipend for their service. Additional program details and application information are available on the Center for Community Engagement website.

NEW Leadership is a national non-partisan program developed by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University to address the underrepresentation of women in American politics. There are NEW Leadership programs in about 25 states. NEW Leadership Texas has been at UT since 2012.

NEW Leadership Texas is a six-day residential summer institute sponsored by UT’s Center for Women’s & Gender Studies that educates college students about the important role that politics plays in their lives and encourages them to become effective leaders in the political arena.

Who should apply?

•     Undergraduate students enrolled in any Texas college or university for 2022-2023, or are graduating in May 2023;
•     Texas residents attending out-of-state schools;
•     All majors are welcome

My name is Ashley Berry, and I am the Senior Administrative Program Coordinator at the Center for Women’s & Gender Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. We will be hosting NEW Leadership Texas on campus from May 31 to June 5. 

NEW Leadership Texas brings together college students from across the political spectrum to the UT Austin campus each year to discuss the roles of women in leadership and politics. The program exposes participants to new ideas and opportunities as they consider their future careers.

Participation in NEW Leadership Texas does have a program fee of $500. However, if funding for the fee cannot be obtained from the school or department, we have scholarships available.

Texas Career Engagement Internship Fund

Summer 2023

Texas Career Engagement created the Internship Fund to help reduce the financial barriers to internship participation for UT Austin undergraduate and graduate students with high financial need. Students may be eligible to receive funding of $15 per hour up to a maximum total of $2,000 based on internship hours completed between June 1 and August 11, 2023. Explore the TCE Internship Fund page to learn about student and internship eligibility, to learn more about the funding and to apply. We encourage you to apply early as priority to the limited funds will be given to eligible students with the highest financial need and earliest application date.

In collaboration with our long-time community partner Dove Springs Proud, UT’s Center for Community Engagement is excited to invite you to our upcoming Front Porch Gathering, Connecting UT Students to Community Priorities: Direct Service and Leadership Programs. This event will be held in Dove Springs.

Based on community priority responses, we are introducing attendees to the work of CCE’s student engagement and leadership programs. During this Front Porch Gathering, we will hear directly from student leaders and the CCE staff who manage direct service opportunities with communities locally, nationally, and internationally to discuss how Student Engagement programming connects students seeking volunteer experience with service-based community organizations.

We will also facilitate smaller break-out groups for community members to share and identify direct-service opportunities for students in the surrounding Central Texas area and provide input on additional ways these programs can continue to connect with and support the priorities of the surrounding communities.

ABOUT THE FRONT PORCH GATHERING 

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) serves as UT Austin’s “front porch.” This center fosters mutually beneficial community-university collaborations that further the university’s mission to serve Texas and beyond, with an emphasis on historically and currently underserved communities.

CCE’s Front Porch Gathering Series represents UT’s open door to the Austin community. These events connect UT faculty and resources with engaged community members and organizations in an effort to identify strategies, align efforts, and foster collaborative relationships that result in action. The monthly gathering works to address issues of equity, disparity, and access in Central Texas.

Longhorn TIES seeks to enhance the student experience for students who identify as neurodivergent through advocacy, connections and training, starting with the New Student Orientation process and continuing throughout the student’s tenure at the university. Longhorn TIES encompasses neurodivergent student support services, #NDatUT campus-wide programming and events, presentations and trainings, and more!

LAH’s EnvisionAustin 2022 winners have developed a mission to close the tree canopy gap between higher and lower-income communities in Austin. Through our research, we discovered that West Austin has an index of 78%, while East Austin has an index of only 22%, where people of color make up the majority of the population. Both adults and children are negatively affected by the lack of trees and green spaces, and Texas Trees for Change aims to promote both environmentalism and social justice through planting trees in East Austin elementary schools.

The topic is Revolution or Reform: the Future of Autocratic Regimes, particularly with a focus on Iran, Russia, and China. We feel this is a very timely and pertinent discussion. Our speakers are Nizar Zakka, a Lebanese political activist who was imprisoned in Iran, Dr. Nahid Siamdoust, a cultural historian here on campus, Dr. Xiaobu Lü, a professor who specializes in domestic policies in China, and Dr. Thomas Garza, a Russian language professor who focuses on Russian culture and literature. In addition to politics, we hope to discuss and think about this topic through a cultural and societal lens.

I am pleased to invite you to our event, which will be April 3, 2023 from 6-7:30 PM in the SAC/WCP Auditorium. Our event will be fully catered and admission is free. Additionally, we are a fully open event, so invite all your friends and family, and we would be pleased if you can attend. We would also appreciate it if you could share our event as well to your classes and students, departments, organizations, etc. We will have a Q&A section towards the end of the event where attendees can ask our speakers any unique questions they may have. We hope this will be a great event, and registration is not required, but heavily recommended so we have a good headcount.
