Funding: Scholarships Available for Intensive Language Study in Russian at Middlebury

Full Scholarships Available for Intensive Language Study at the Middlebury Summer Language Schools – The Kathryn Davis Fellows for Peace will cover the cost of one summer of language study (tuition, room, and board)—from the beginner to graduate level—in Russian. The deadline is January 15, 2015. See the website for application details.

Middlebury’s Kathryn Wasserman Davis School of Russian — Take four classes in Russian and earn 12 credit hours at the 8-week immersion program in Middlebury, Vermont.

The College of Liberal Arts is now recruiting applicants for the Headliners Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship 2015 – 2016. This is $6,000 award for students who excel in writing and who have a serious interest in journalism.

The Bradsby and the Lynch families are looking for a mother’s helper/driver to pick up kids, get them home and started on homework, and take them to the Joe Jamail Swim Center at UT for 5:00 p.m. weekday Longhorn Aquatics swim practice.  The job would require approximately 6 hours per week, Monday through Thursday afternoons. The pay is $110 a week.  The helper would be responsible for picking up two seventh grade students from Lamar Middle School at 3:30 p.m., driving the students home to allow for snack/changing for swimming/homework, and then driving the Lamar students and a younger fifth grade sibling to UT in time to arrive at 4:50 p.m..  Tuesdays will require a 3:00 p.m. start time and a change in the transportation routine to accommodate an after-school activity, but the job will end at the regular time of 5:00 p.m..  There is the potential for occasional additional paid hours to respond to unforeseen circumstances such as an ill child or the unavailability of a parent to pick up the children from UT.  Job candidates should enjoy children, have no criminal record, have a clean driving history, and be comfortable and confident driving in Austin.
 
The Longhorn Aquatics swim schedule extends through the school year, ending in May.   There is the potential for continued employment through the summer on a different schedule.  The families understand that college final exams may conflict with the children’s schedule, and the families with make alternate transportation plans should that conflict arise.

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) at The University of Texas is seeking applicants for Summer 2015 & Academic Year 2015-16

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships.

CREEES offers FLAS Fellowships to fund highly competitive graduate and undergraduate students for the study of regional foreign languages, including (but not limited to):

Russian • Polish • Czech • Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian • Ukrainian • Bulgarian •Persian/Tajik* • Turkish* • Romani* • Yiddish* as well asother contemporary regional languages!
Other languages may be added pending approval and on a case-by-case basis. 
* Study of noted languages should be applicable to area studies of the REEE region.FLAS awards are available for both academic year (in residence at UT) and summer studies (abroad, at UT or elsewhere in the US). FLAS for European Studies Due Feb. 6

The Center for European Studies is pleased to once again be able to offer FLAS Fellowships for both undergraduate and graduate students for Summer 2015 and AY 2015-16.

Students must be U.S. citizens or  permanent residents and may be from any discipline at UT. We especially encourage students from the professional schools to apply.

Academic year students must be enrolled at UT as a full time student and agree to take one approved foreign language course and one area studies course focusing on Europe (both letter grade based).

Summer students will be enrolled in an intensive foreign language program either in the U.S. or Europe (for intermediate and advanced levels only).

“The New Political Reality of Immigration in an Aging Society” by Dr. Fernando Torres-Gil Nov. 20 at 12:15 p.m.

As our country’s average age and immigrant population increase, it is worthwhile to understand the intersection of aging, diversity, economy, and policy. In his upcoming lecture, Dr. Fernando Torres-Gil, who served as former Assistant Secretary for Aging under President Clinton, discusses the relationship between aging of society and the current debates around immigration reform. The event is scheduled on November 20th at 12:15 in the LBJ School First Floor Lobby.

Torres-Gil’s lecture is co-sponsored by the LBJ School and the Department of Government. This event is part of the LBJ School’s “50 for 50” initiative, a series of 50 events celebrating 50 years of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s legislative legacy. The series explores civil rights issues such as human rights, immigration, and social justice, calling for a renewed effort to improve the lives of all citizens.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Spring Break 2015: New Orleans, LA

This Spring Break (March 14th- 21st) 21 students from across the UT campus will travel to New Orleans, LA, to participate in a week of service. We are looking for students who want to learn and serve alongside a new community, while developing their leadership skills.Students will immerse themselves in the New Orleans culture, while gaining a deeper understanding of the social issues facing the community. The student group will work on a Habitat for Humanity rebuild, along with an Edible Schoolyard for children.
