Undergraduate Philosophy Journal Calls for Papers
Ex Nihilo, UT’s undergraduate philosophy journal, is announcing a call for papers for publication in the spring semester. Ex Nihilo is run entirely by UT students with the aim of showcasing the philosophical talent of UT’s undergraduates. This is a great opportunity for committed students of philosophy to demonstrate their knowledge and writing skills and be published in a journal before entering graduate school or a professional career.
The submission guidelines are as follows:
1. Length: 10-25 pages double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font. We will take submissions of papers over 25 pages, but those might have to be edited for brevity.
2. Topic: Any philosophical topic of substance is acceptable. Term papers written for class are acceptable so long as they are insightful and sufficiently independent of specific information from that class.
3. Format: Every paper must include an abstract. In a separate attachment, include the title of your paper, your name, email, and major. Do not include any identifying information in your paper.
4. Submission Date: All materials must be submitted to ex.nihilo.journal@gmail.com by January 15th.
Joynes Reading Room Event-Thursday, Dec 2
7:30PM this Thursday, Dec. 2 is the last Joynes Reading Room literary event of 2010, an evening with visiting Canadian poet Stephen Scobie.
Scobie is the author of more than twenty books of poetry and criticism, and is Professor Emeritus at the University of Victoria. He will share recent work inspired by the American folk singer Bob Dylan, and by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, author of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
A reception with light refreshments will follow the poetry reading. This event is free and open to everybody. The Joynes Reading Room is located on the east side of Carothers Residence Hall at 2501 Whitis Ave. on the UT campus. Call 512-471-5787 for more information.

Subiendo: The Academy for Rising Leaders
According to the U.S. Census, between 2000 and 2006, Hispanics accounted for one-half of the nation’s growth. Hispanics are the largest and youngest minority group in the United States. One-in-five schoolchildren is Hispanic. One-in-four newborns is Hispanic. According to the Pew Center, never before in this country’s history has a minority ethnic group made up so large a share of the youngest Americans. This changing demography brings new challenges and opportunities.
The leaders of tomorrow must be prepared to address the needs of this rising generation. It is imperative that these emerging leaders receive the necessary education and training to realize their potential. To help meet this need, University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business and the Texas Exes host Subiendo: The Academy for Rising Leaders.
The Academy
Subiendo brings to the University outstanding students who have completed their junior year of high school. These students participate over a four-day (three-night) period in intensive leadership training and community building exercises. Students learn valuable skills through simulation exercises and classroom training. Student cohorts analyze policy issues and present solutions in a plenary session. Students also participate in additional activities, including a visit to the state capitol, a meeting with business leaders, and recreational networking and team-building exercises.
The Subiendo Network
The Academy is the beginning of an ongoing mentoring relationship between Subiendo students and university students, alumni, and prominent leaders from a broad spectrum of fields and professions. Subiendo attendees are mentored by their Academy counselors throughout their senior year of high school to help with the college application process.

Joynes Reading Room Event, Thursday, November 18 Free Books!
In collaboration with the Austin Center for Photography, the Joynes Reading Room will host a panel discussion on Thursday, Nov. 18th, at 7PM, with four outstanding photographers. The theme of the panel will be “Growing Up in Texas”. The University of Texas Press has provided some free copies of coffee table books by two of these photographers—we’ll be giving away those books at the event.
Penny De Los Santos is an award-winning documentary photographer recognized for her evocative photo essays and food, travel, and landscape photography. Once named College Photographer of Year by the National Press Photographer’s Association, she now works as a senior contributing photographer to Saveur magazine, and is a regular contributor to National Geographic.
Susan Gaetz Duarte is an editorial and documentary photographer based in Austin. Her images have appeared in numerous publications including National Geographic, the Denver Post, and the Dallas Morning News. She is co-author of the book The Quiet Land: Mennonites in Texas, published by Texas A&M Press.
O. Rufus Lovett is a nationally acclaimed photographer. His first book, Weeping Mary, received the prestigious Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Outstanding Magazine Photography. His second book, Kilgore Rangerettes, was published in 2008 by University of Texas Press. Lovett has taught photography at Kilgore College, in Kilgore, Texas, for more than three decades, and is a regular contributing photographer to Texas Monthly. He lives in Longview, Texas.
After graduating from St. Edwards University, Jeff Wilson worked as a documentary photographer at the Texas House of Representatives and as a Forensic Photographer at the Texas Department of Public Safety. More recently, he won a National Magazine Award for his work on dance halls for Texas Monthly. His book Home Fields was published recently by the University of Texas Press.

Free Law School Admissions Seminar (and Free Pizza)
The Plan II Pre Law Society will be hosting a free law school admissions seminar Thursday, November 11th. A law school admissions expert will discuss various aspects of the application process, from writing effective personal statements to getting great letters of recommendation to tackling the dreaded LSAT. This will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in law school or taking the LSAT to learn more about how to navigate the application process.
