Texas Cowboys Accepting Applications

My name is Josh Gold, and I am contacting you on behalf of Texas Cowboys. Texas Cowboys is an honorary men’s service organization founded in 1922 with the purpose of serving the University of Texas and the City of Austin.  We are primarily a service organization, and although we are best known for firing Smokey the Cannon at the home football games, we have maintained a partnership with the ARC of the Capital Area since 1954. Each fall, we throw Harvest Moon, a benefit concert to raise money for the ARC.  In addition to our work with the ARC, we serve the University and other organizations around Austin, completing over 1500 service hours each semester.

This semester, I have privilege of serving as Selection Chairman for Texas Cowboys, and that is why I am contacting you today. Each semester, we open up applications to all male members of the University that have completed at least 3 semesters at UT and have over a 2.5 GPA.  If you or anyone you know is interested, I strongly encourage you to come out to an info session at 4:30 PM on Wednesday, September 18 in the Legends Room of the Etter- Harbin Alumni Center. Actuarial Information Session

An individual who wants to become an actuary must excel at challenging courses in mathematics, have some interest in using these skills to analyze and solve business problems, be willing to spend many hours preparing for professional examinations, and possess good communication skills.

If you think that you may be good candidates for this type of career, please come to the upcoming Actuarial Studies Information Session. The session is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, 4-5 pm and will take place in RLM 5.124.

Actuarial program director Mark Maxwell will briefly describe the actuarial profession, the professional actuarial organizations, the actuarial credentialing process, and the UT actuarial program/degree. Is the profession right for you?  Characteristics of both successful and unsuccessful students will be discussed so that you can judge for yourself.

A significant portion of time will be reserved to answer questions from those in attendance.

Joynes Room Events- September 26 Writer Caleb Crain and October 1 Pulitzer Prize Journalist Anne Hull both events @7:00 pm

The Joynes Room will host writer Caleb Crain for a free public event at 7 p.m. on September 26th. Crain is a frequent contributor to publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and the Paris Review. His first novel, Necessary Errors, tells the story of a young American who travels to Prague shortly after the Velvet Revolution, hoping to learn something about the world and about himself. The Joynes Reading Room has a limited number of FREE BOOKS by Caleb Crain to give away, so you can read his novel before he visits. These books are only available to UT honors students who make a commitment to attend the event. Free books may be claimed IN PERSON at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007).

The following week, our guest will be Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Anne Hull. In her field reporting for the Washington Post, Hull writes in-depth articles that illuminate the human element of major news stories through the personal experiences of individuals. She has covered the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, domestic incidents of gun violence, and the lives of veterans and their families returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Hull will speak in the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 23) on Tuesday evening, October 1, at 7 p.m., in an event that is free and open to the public.

INFO SESSION: Normandy Scholars Program & History Departmental Honors

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 5pm, Garrison Hall Conference Room (GAR 1.102)

Students are invited to come learn more about the incredible opportunities offered by the Normandy Scholars Program and/or earning Departmental Honors in History. Normandy Scholars is an intensive Spring semester of History coursework focusing on World War II followed by three weeks studying in London, Normandy, Paris, and Berlin. History Honors is a three-semester sequence culminating in a 50-70 page thesis and graduation with special honors. Directors of both programs will be on hand to talk more about the programs and discuss the application process. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Job Description: Must be able to work the following hours, Monday through Friday 12:15pm – 4pm.  If your career goals include alternative transportation, we have a great opportunity for you.  Focused on the UT bicycle program daily duties include: primarily operating the bicycle hub (The Kickstand) Monday through Friday 12:15pm to 4pm, assisting with bicycle registrations, bicycle warning and impounds, and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Excellent customer relations and computer skills.  The ability to accomplish tasks in a timely fashion. Cash handling or customer service experience a plus.  Must be able to work Monday through Friday 12:15pm to 4pm.  Must have basic bicycle knowledge and a strong desire to learn more regarding state laws and UT regulations regarding bicycles as well as general bicycle maintenance knowledge: including how to fix a flat, and minor adjustments to seats, brakes and handlebars.

Pay: $10/Hr
