The Undergraduate Fellows Program provides teaching, mentorship, professional development, and research opportunities for UT-Austin’s youngest aspiring statesmen and scholars. Fellows will convene monthly throughout the academic year to participate in discussion groups, be mentored by the Clements Center’s affiliated scholars, meet with distinguished guests and visiting speakers, and exchange ideas on their course projects. Each year will also include at least one field tour of a nearby historic site related to diplomatic and military history. Preference will be given to undergraduates whose coursework and/or extracurricular activities bear directly on American foreign policy, military and diplomatic history, and international security. A competitive application process will yield each academic year’s class of 15-20 Fellows. The deadline for the 2016-2017 academic year applications is Monday, April 18. Summer Student Development Fund
The Summer Student Development Fund awards funds to undergraduate and graduate students who secure unpaid summer internships in the fields of national security and foreign policy. Applications for Summer 2016 are due Monday, April 25th. Awards will be granted to those students whose summer work best reflects the mission and goals of the Clements Center. Past recipients have interned with the US Department of State, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the McCain Institute for International Leadership, the Project on Middle East Democracy, and the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs. Because internships in foreign and defense policy can be an essential part of professional development and career opportunities in national security policy, the Clements Center wants to help UT students in identifying and pursuing internship opportunities. We have created an Internship Database containing information on a broad range of internships in foreign policy, human rights, international development, international economics, and intelligence/security. This is an excellent resource for students that can be found on our website.
Positions in language research (linguistics, cognitive neuroscience) for spring graduates
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Maryland, is looking to fill up to four full-time positions for post-baccalaureate researchers.
Starting date for all positions is Summer/Fall 2016. Salary is competitive, with benefits included. The positions would be ideal for individuals with a BA degree who are interested in gaining significant research experience in a very active research group as preparation for a research career. Applicants must already have permission to work in the US, or be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and should have completed a BA or BS degree by the time of appointment. The ability to interact comfortably with a wide variety of people (and machines) is a distinct advantage. Applicants may request to be considered for all four positions.

Positions #1–#2: Baggett Research Fellowships
Baggett Fellowships are full-time positions. Fellows can pursue research in linguistics, cognitive (neuro-)science of language, language acquisition, or computational modeling. 1–2 positions are available for 2016-2017. Positions are for one year and are not renewable.

Position #3: Research Assistant in Psycholinguistics/Cognitive Neuroscience
This person will be involved in all aspects of studies of language comprehension using behavioral and neuroscientific techniques, including electrophysiological brain recordings (training provided). The person will also contribute to Maryland’s Language Science program (http://languagescience.umd.edu/). Previous experience in (psycho)linguistics preferred. 1 year initial appointment, possibility of extension.

Position #4: Research Assistant in Syntax and Morphology
This person will be involved in all aspects of syntactic analysis of several languages, some of which are new to the study of linguistics, using methods of morpho-syntactic analysis and corpus construction (training provided). The person will also assist in bibliographical research and website construction.The person will also contribute to Maryland’s Language Science program (http://languagescience.umd.edu/). Previous experience in linguistics preferred. 1 year initial appointment, possibility of extension.

The department is part of a vibrant language science community (http://languagescience.umd.edu) that numbers 200 faculty, researchers, and graduate students across 17 departments and centers spanning 6 colleges, and is affiliated with the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (http://www.nacs.umd.edu/) and the Maryland Neuroimaging Center (http://mnc.umd.edu/).

Feminist Action Project Seeks Cosponsorship
My name is Mia Ferguson, and I am a student representative for the Feminist Action Project here on campus. The Feminist Action Project is a student group that organizes an annual activist conference for gender justice in today’s world.
The title of our conference this year is, “Mapping Out the Crossroads, Beyond Mainstream Feminism”. At this year’s conference, we hope to cultivate an environment where feminism can be explored through intersectionality and explore concepts that transcend the dialogue found in everyday media, such as toxic masculinity, colorism and activist self-care. We are honored to announce our keynote speaker, Kim Katrin Millan, an award-winning, internationally acclaimed artist, educator and writer. I wanted to see if you would be interested in co-sponsoring the program with us. I realize that the Texas Parents Association has already distributed funds to UT student organizations for the year, but there are many ways to co-sponsor other than financially. Summer 2016 Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunity
The Senate of College Councils has a $1,000 study abroad scholarship to give out for the Summer 2016 semester.
The Summer 2016 Study Abroad Scholarship offers a merit-based $1,000 scholarship to a qualifying student to pursue his or her education around the world through programs offered through UT’s Study Abroad Office.
Eligibility: Open to all UT Austin students, including international students, studying abroad in Summer 2016. Maymester study abroad students are NOT eligible. Applicants may apply for the Academic Enrichment Study Abroad Scholarship as many times as they wish, but once an individual has been awarded the scholarship, he/she may not be awarded the scholarship a second time.

Will Potter is an award-winning investigative journalist and author based in Washington, D.C. He specializes in dissident politics and culture, the policing of dissent, and civil liberties post-9/11. His work has appeared in the world’s top media outlets, including the Washington Post, CNN, National Geographic, WIRED, NPR, the History Channel, and Rolling Stone. His award-winnning book, Green Is The New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement Under Siege, exposes how non-violent animal rights and environmental protesters came to be classified by the FBI as “eco-terrorists.” This year he was selected as a TED Senior Fellow, and he recently was appointed the Marsh Visiting Professor in Journalism at the University of Michigan. The Joynes Reading Room has a limited number of free books by Will Potter which we will give away to interested honors students who inquire in person at the front desk, CRD 007.
Schwarzman Scholars Info Session
Inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, Schwarzman Scholars is a highly selective international scholarship program designed to prepare future leaders for success in a world where China plays a key global role. The program will give the best and brightest young leaders from around the world the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through a fully-funded one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities. Scholars chosen for this highly selective program will live in Beijing for a year of study and cultural immersion, attending lectures, traveling and developing a better understanding of China. Harry Ransom Center Internships
The Liberal Arts Honors Program offers an internship at the Harry Ransom Center (http://www.hrc.utexas.edu) that is designed to provide an LAH senior or advanced junior with experience in the nature and operation of a major humanities research center. The experience gained by interns will benefit them in their own research projects, in possible graduate studies, and even as a career option in such fields as librarianship, museum studies, archival or curatorial work, as well as public affairs, marketing, public programming and event management.
Once selected, interns will choose from a variety of opportunities within the center. These vary from year to year, but will likely include:
processing collections
planning exhibitions
doing editorial and publicity work
working on website enhancement projects
marketing and public affairs
Academic year 2016-2017:
Three LAH internships are available for the academic year 2016-2017. Internships begin the second week of classes and conclude on the last class day. Most interns work in a single department throughout the year, but some choose to change at semester break.
The position is not a benefits-eligible one, but there is a stipend of $1500 per semester, for which the intern is expected to put in a 10-hour work week. The student must be registered for a minimum of six hours of coursework. In addition there is the possibility of academic credit if the student registers for a conference course (either TC or English) with an appropriate supervising professor.

An applicant should provide the following:
a one-page resumé,
a letter from the student describing his/her interest and qualifications,
a letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member or someone who knows the candidate’s professional qualification pertinent to this internship
Both letters should be addressed to Danielle Brune Sigler, Associate Director for Scholarly Programs, but should be attached to the resumé and delivered to the LAH office.

Well-paid summer internship for social sciences majors with Visa’s User Experience team
The Visa User Experience team has a 12 week long paid summer internship that is a fantastic opportunity for social sciences students to learn more about user experience (UX) design and research while getting valuable work experience. (Our successful interns are often offered full-time positions after graduation.) A number of us on the team are psychology, sociology, or anthropology grads and we’ve found that our backgrounds really serve us well in this field, and we wanted to reach out specifically to students in these fields. The Liberal Arts Honors program has an excellent reputation, and we wanted to make sure your students were aware of this opportunity.
We are a team of interaction designers and user researchers located at Visa’s beautiful new campus at 183 and Oak Knoll in Northwest Austin, and we have a state of the art 1200 sq foot usability lab—one of the nicest in the country. Our intern will have the chance to learn about user interface design, user research, design thinking and usability testing and will be working on projects with the whole team throughout the summer.
UX as a whole is a growing field with many job opportunities and the same kind of salary-earning potential as software engineering. It’s a really rewarding career for people who are technologically curious, good communicators who enjoy working with people, and who want to actually use some of the skills learned in social sciences courses in the real world. It’s also a lot of fun!
What we’re looking for: Students who are good writers and good verbal communicators, who can think logically and analytically, and have an interest in design and technology. (They don’t need to know how to code.) Bonus points if they’ve taken research methods courses, statistics, survey design, ethnography, or usability courses.
Requirements: Students must be graduating in December 2016 or May 2017.
Nice to haves: Knowledge of HTML, Adobe products, audio/video editing tools
When, where, what: 12 week long paid internship at Visa’s Northwest Austin office. Pay rate is $22-26/hour based on experience.
Perks: Free garage parking, onsite gym, fitness and yoga classes, game room, cafeteria and Starbucks on campus. Visa offers many extra activities and experiences throughout the summer for interns, including a week-long all expenses-paid trip to the Visa mothership in the San Francisco Bay Area.
