The title of her talk is “Climate Change and Health: Observations from Southern India.”
Dr. Rudrappa researches and teaches about reproductive justice, labor markets, and gender. She has previously written on Indian software workers in the U.S. and global surrogacy in India. Her broader work is on what she calls “markets in life,” which covers her research on labor markets and infertility assistance, and the impacts of climate change on global health.

The Student Selection Committee encourages you to nominate your favorite teachers for the Jean Holloway Award for Excellence in Teaching.
This award is presented annually to a teacher in the College of Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences who demonstrates a warm spirit, a concern for society and the individual, and the ability to impart knowledge while challenging students to independent inquiry and create thought.
The award amounts to more than $4,500, and the recipient is recognized with a ceremony in the spring. More information can be found at txex.es/holloway. The nomination deadline is Monday, November 18th, 5:00 pm.
This semester, LAUNCH is awarding at least two scholarships of $250.00–$500.00 each for those pursuing a research project in the College of Liberal Arts. The goal of the scholarships is to encourage the pursuit of personal initiatives within Liberal Arts research. These scholarships can assist in accomplishing the initial steps of a proposal, such as securing funding for data collection. If a specific need for a stipend is demonstrated, these scholarships can also act as a form of compensation.

Student Government and the Texas Exes Advocacy Department are co-sponsoring the Longhorn Advocate Mentorship Program (LAMP), which pairs a student, alumni, and State Senator from key State Senate Districts in order to foster civic engagement and connect current and former students from the same area of Texas. The goals of the program are to champion policies and issues benefitting UT and higher education, empower student-alumni pairs to tackle higher education policies, and develop relationships with alumni mentors and legislators. We are looking for students from Senate Districts 4, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 30. The application for LAMP can be found here. Billy Table, a fourth year Doctoral Candidate in Communication Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, is looking for participants for their dissertation research. The study is survey-based, and contains questions about stress, resilience, family conflict, and family support experiences of transgender/gender non-conforming individuals.
If you are over 18, are trans/GNC, are out to at least one member of your family, and communicate with that member at least once a month, you are eligible for the study. The survey takes about 20-25 minutes, and there is an optional Visa gift card drawing you may enter at the end (odds of winning = 1 out of 50). Also – if you would be willing to share the survey link with a group, listserv, or colleagues who may be interested, that would be greatly appreciated.

On Wednesday, November 6th, visiting poet Ada Limón will read her work in the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007) at 7 p.m. Limón’s most recent book, The Carrying (2018), won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was named one of the top five poetry books of the year by the Washington Post. A review in the New York Times praised Limón’s “novelistic knack for scene,” and said that “the narrative lyrics in this remarkable collection, her fifth, could stand as compressed stories about anxiety and the body.” Limón lives in Kentucky and teaches in the summer program at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Undergraduate honors students at UT Austin may receive a free copy of The Carrying (courtesy of the Mary Lu Joynes Endowment) while supplies last, by visiting the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room and requesting the book. (The books are available now!) This reading is free and open to the public. Have you ever been confused about what technological resources you’re allowed to use for an assignment, for example, a class GroupMe? Come share your experiences at our casual, open-discussion town hall! Pizza, drinks, and desserts will be provided as we discuss the often confusing role of technology in academic integrity. This event will help us determine how to clarify the university’s academic integrity policies surrounding resources that help us learn collaboratively.
