Advertisements are everywhere. You see them on your way to work or school, you see them while walking down the street, you even see them in your own home when you surf the Internet or watch TV. These ads are all around us and believe it or not, their exposure influences the way we all think. From national ads to global ads, there is a huge lack of diversity. Some ads even encourage whitewashing. This is an issue because advertising has an impact on our perception of society.
What kinds of messages are these companies portraying when they exclude minorities in their marketing and advertising campaigns? Mary Ellen Dugan, CMO of WP Engine, spoke about this exact topic at SXSW 2017. She believes that diversity should be “intentionally embraced” by companies. Here at the Center, we agree wholeheartedly and want this diversity to expand internationally as well.
Begin embracing diversity by finding ways in which you can include diversity in your advertisements, despite whether they are local, national, or international. Together, we can make a difference to include everybody. Check out Mary Ellen’s session below.
