The High School Mariachi program is designed to provide high school students with expert instruction from professionals active in the field of mariachi performance. It is open to students entering grades 10, 11, 12, or freshman year in college. This year’s virtual camp will provide intensive instrumental tutorials, a vocal workshop, and a presentation on historical content that has shaped the mariachi world. Within the instrumental tutorial, you will further develop your instrumental skills and apply those skills to pieces within the traditional mariachi repertoire. As a student in the vocal workshop, you will work on developing general breathing and vocalization techniques to build range and stamina, as well as interpretive skills necessary for any mariachi vocalist, including chorus singers. Each day, we will end with a historical lecture to further contextualize mariachi music, and to create a better understanding of the social and cultural significance of this music.
This camp is led by Prof. Mónica Fogelquist, Director of Mariachi Ensembles, assisted by professional mariachi performers and instructors from across the country. We hope that through this interactive experience, your love and appreciation for mariachi music will grow and that you will consider continuing your mariachi studies beyond high school!
Camp is scheduled to be held daily from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM with a break for lunch. As final schedule details are confirmed, it’s possible this time may adjust by 30 minutes earlier or later in the day.
