FAQs

What is going to happen to Longhorn Powerlifting because of COVID-19?

Following Rec Sports guidelines, we are operating with contact tracing in mind and encouraging our members to check their symptoms before going to any practice or event.

Does Longhorn Powerlifting offer scholarships to high school students?

Longhorn Powerlifting does NOT currently offer any scholarships to any high school students. However, we are in the process of establishing one. A MINIMUM gift of $25,000 is needed in order to CREATE this scholarship.

What does it mean when a high school student “signs” to lift for Longhorn Powerlifting?

Over the past couple of years, more and more high school students are “signing” to powerlift at the collegiate level. Unfortunately for Longhorn Powerlifting and the University of Texas, we do not offer any scholarship promise with this “signing”. Our goal is to increase awareness for the high school to collegiate powerlifting transition as well as highlight the academic and athletic accomplishments the signees have faced.

In order to be eligible for a signing, a high school student must have:

  1. Powerlifted in high school
    • Any federation is allowed including but not limited to THSPA/THSWPA, WHSPA, IHSPLA, USAPL, USPA, etc.
    • Having competed through at least 1 year
  2. Be accepted into the university
    • Longhorn Powerlifting does not have any say in admissions and cannot provide any extensions for UT applications. You must submit your application by the stated UT Austin deadline and then be accepted to be eligible for recruitment and signing. If you do not submit your application in time, we unfortunately cannot consider you for this season of high school recruiting.

3. Confirmed their acceptance to the university

Note: Please fill out the Google Form on the High School Lifter tab so we can communicate with you if you are interested in signing with Longhorn Powerlifting.

Do I need to purchase my own equipment?

Longhorn Powerlifting does check out suits, singlets, and belts to current members. We do recommend purchasing lifting-specific shoes, belts, knee sleeves, singlets, and wrist wraps as these are items required by every lifter regardless of whether they compete RAW or EQUIPPED.

How do we train?

Note that powerlifting is NOT bodybuilding nor weightlifting! Our goal is to increase strength in the three lifts: Squat, Bench, and Deadlift. So guys, do not join if you just want to look strong, and girls, this sport will not turn you into the Hulk, guaranteed.

What are the team dues?

Once new lifters are offered a spot on the team, dues must be collected in order to fund Collegiate Nationals and give access to the reserved powerlifting room and use of team equipment. Dues are also allocated to cover the yearly trip to Nationals including but not limited to hotels, entry fees, and transportation. In addition, we offer structured workout sessions, experienced coaches, a chance to compete for the University of Texas, and a shot at winning a National Championship this year. The team dues are $80 a semester or $150 for the year.

Where do we train?

In order to focus on powerlifting, Longhorn Powerlifting has a designated practice time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Gameday Barbell. More information can be found on the About tab.

There is also a designated “Powerlifting Room” known as the Closet in the Recreational Sports Center that is intended for Powerlifting members only in the event that practice times cannot be made.
