An international research team that includes Benny Freeman, professor in the Cockrell School’s McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering, has pioneered a new filtration technique that could dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes to extract lithium from the earth, taking the process from months and years to hours. This could improve the supply of lithium, which is essential for enabling electric vehicles and for the integration of renewable energy sources.
Benny Freeman selected to present Reilly Lectures
Two Reilly Lectures will be presented by Benny Freeman at the University of Notre Dame’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering on January 23rd and 24th, 2020. The first entitled, “Ion Solubility, Diffusivity and Transport in Charged Polymer Membranes,” and the second, “Advanced Separation Membranes: Historical Development and Future Trends.”
Benny Freeman – 2020 POLY Fellow Awardee
This year’s selected and inducted 2020 POLY Fellows awardees truly demonstrate excellence in all ways that POLY members advance the field of polymer science, through scientific accomplishments and service to the profession. Awardees will be honored with a plaque during the Spring ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, at the POLY/PMSE Award Ceremony, held at the Franklin Institute.
Hee Jeung Oh to join Penn State
Hee Jeung Oh will join the faculty at Penn State in Fall 2019. She is currently a postdoctoral scholar at University of California, Berkeley. She earned her master’s and doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of Profs. Benny Freeman and Donald Paul.
Jovan Kamcev to join University of Michigan, Chemical Engineering Faculty
Jovan Kamcev will join the faculty at University of Michigan, Department of Chemical Engineering in Fall 2019. He is currently a postdoctoral scholar working with Prof. Jeffrey Long in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Applied Math & Statistics from Stony Brook University and his master’s and a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of Profs. Benny Freeman and Donald Paul.
Jovan Kamcev to Receive the Henkel Award for Outstanding Graduate Research in Polymer Science & Engineering
Former UT Austin graduate student, Jovan Kamcev, will receive The Henkel Award for Outstanding Graduate Research in Polymer Science and Engineering. This award is given to recognize a graduate student or recent graduate who has completed an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in polymeric research. The award consists of a plaque and an honorarium of $2,000 which will be presented at the POLY/PMSE award symposium at the Fall National American Chemical Society (ACS) Meeting on Chemistry & Water, August 25-29, 2019, in San Diego, California.
