Student Outcomes

Most of our students continue in Microbe Hackers for at least two semesters, with a majority serving as mentors during their sophomore and junior years, and a significant number of those students spend their entire time at UT Austin in our research community (AKA, Microbe Hackers 4 Life).

Students who continue beyond their second semester can take on multiple roles within the lab course. This ranges from someone who does purely research to a mentor who primarily focuses on helping younger students and running the lab course. Some of our mentors have even had the opportunity to present their research at conferences or publish their work.

Beyond the lab

After college, our students continue to make us proud with their post graduation journeys. Every year, a significant number of Microbe Hackers go to medical school or other health professions, such as dental or optometry or PA school (~20 in many years). A smaller number go on to PhD or other graduate programs, such as law school, or even into biotech or industry. Regardless, of what they go on to, we are proud of them!

Some of the medical schools our alumni have been accepted in recent years include:

  • Stanford Medical School
  • Baylor College of Medicine
  • UT Southwestern
  • McGovern Medical School
  • Dell Medical School
  • Long Medical School
  • UT Medical Branch at Galveston
  • University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
  • University of Pennsylvania Medical School
  • and many others, including several DO schools.
