It’s Open Education Week and we are trying to spread the work about the benefits of using open educational resources (OER). We were in the PCL lobby today telling students about OER and encouraging them to share how much they spent on course materials this semester and share a story about how course material costs impact their education and life. We’ll be sharing this information with faculty and administrators here at UT. Here’s a visual of what students are paying for their course materials:
We are also going to have an Introduction to OER Workshop for faculty and instructors on Thursday, March 5th, from 9:00-12:00 in PCL Learning Lab 4. The workshop will include an overview of OER and affordable learning options, a faculty panel, small group work evaluating OER repositories, and plenty of time to ask questions. Plus there will be breakfast tacos! There are still spots available for this free workshop and you can sign up in UT Learn.
Finally, the Center for OER and Language Learning is hosting an online OER Hangout on Wednesday, March 4th at 6:00pm Central time. This is an opportunity for people to hear from and talk to teachers who have adopted and adapted OER. You can find more information on their website.
