For Thursday of Open Access Week, we’d like to highlight a relatively new OA initiative that we are supporting – CEU Press: Opening the Future. Central European Press specializes in the history of the region, communism, and transitions to democracy. It publishes approximately 25 new monographs per year. Opening the Future is a collective subscription model that is meant to achieve the dual objectives of increasing access to collections and supporting open access book publishing. UT Libraries pays a small annual membership fee to get DRM-free, unlimited access to a selection of the well-regarded CEU Press backlist, with perpetual access to those titles after three years. The membership revenue is used to produce new OA monographs with a goal of making their entire frontlist available OA. We are excited about this model because it provides a pathway for open access to books that doesn’t rely on large book publishing charges to authors.
