Undergraduate Admission
Students wishing to apply and audition for undergraduate degrees in music should visit the Undergraduate Admissions section of the Butler School of Music website for information pertaining to their specific degree program, application instructions, and audition information.
Please note: All students at The University of Texas at Austin are eligible to audition for both the Symphony Orchestra and the University Orchestra, regardless of major.
Graduate Admission
The Butler School of Music offers master’s (MM) and doctoral (DMA) degrees in orchestral conducting. Students wishing to apply for these degree programs (or any other graduate degree program in music) should visit the Graduate Admissions section of the Butler School of Music website for application instructions.
Candidates wishing to apply for the MM or DMA in orchestral conducting should review the application and prescreening audition requirements specific to conducting applicants. The following will make up the basis of your conducting audition:
Video Prescreening (required)
- One session of ensemble rehearsal lasting no less than fifteen minutes, preferably edited to highlight segments focused on dealing with specific rehearsal problems of intonation, ensemble balance, technique, style or interpretation. Videos of unbroken runthroughs in a rehearsal setting are not considered rehearsal material.
- One unedited performance of a complete work, preferably the same work featured in the rehearsal video above.
The camera should be positioned behind the ensemble facing the conductor and the conductor should be clearly visible.
Audition (if invited)
- Repertoire and audition expectations will be discussed at the time the applicant is invited to audition live.
For additional information about graduate auditions in orchestral conducting, please view the Butler School of Music admissions information linked above. For specific questions after reviewing this information, you may contact Graduate Admissions Coordinator Mr. Daniel Seriff.
