The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra (UTSO) is recognized as one of the top college orchestras in the nation. The orchestra has been featured since 2007 as part of The International Festival-Institute at Round Top’s yearly “August to April Series,” and in 2008 the group performed at The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. In 2009 and 2016, the orchestra performed to wide acclaim at the Texas Music Educator’s Association convention in San Antonio, Texas. Students in the UTSO have had the opportunity to work with noted musicians such as Jennifer Higdon, John Adams, William Bolcom and Claude Baker, in addition to featured appearances with UT’s world-renowned faculty of soloists and composers.
How to Join
Membership in Symphony Orchestra is determined via auditions which are open to all qualified students at The University of Texas at Austin. These auditions take place the first week of classes of the fall term, and are heard by the conductors and the appropriate applied music professor. Audition information is posted on the Butler School of Music website, typically around August 1 of each year.
UTSO is a one credit hour course. A student may choose to register for the course either before OR after the audition via normal university registration procedure. In the event a student is not selected for membership in the orchestra, he/she can drop the course credit according to standard university policy. Registering for the course does not guarantee admission.
The Symphony Orchestra meets Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 12:00 to 1:50 PM in MRH 2.118 (also known as MBE 2.118). Please consult the course schedule for registration information and the correct unique number. The course number is ENS 102S for undergraduates, or ENS 182S for graduate students.
