Appointment dates are:
- Fall — Sept. 1 to Jan. 15
- Spring — Jan. 16 to May 31
- Summer I — June 1 to July 15
- Summer II — July 16 to Aug. 31
Students can be hired into both academic and non-academic titles, depending on the work they will be performing. Please email service@prc.utexas a list of the students you will be hiring, EID, email address, brief description of duties, preferred job title and hourly rate. We will need to verify that the duties coincide with the job title and that the student is enrolled in the required hours for the position.

Graduate Student Summer Employment Requirements
Graduate students must be appointed as GRAs during the summer and be enrolled in at least 3 course hours. GRAs must be appointed for at least 20 hours/week to be eligible for in state tuition. See additonal guidelines here: https://gradschool.utexas.edu/summer-employment
If the work that the student will be doing involves academic research, classroom or laboratory instructional or support duties, tutoring, or other duties that are academic in nature, they should be assigned to a student academic job profile. Non-Academic Employment
Student Non-Academic work generally refers to performing administrative, customer service, or event-planning duties for a university department. This webpage serves as an overview for non-academic work here at The University of Texas at Austin. See all info for non-academic employment, here: student non-academic employment titles. The duties of the position do not involve academic research, classroom or laboratory instructional or support duties, tutoring, or other duties that are academic in nature. If you’re performing those types of work, you must be assigned to a student academic title.
Non-Academic duties may include:
- office work and clerical duties
- customer and student services
- duties related to operation of university facilities
- data entry and technical support
- duties related to business operations and planning
- support services for conferences, programs, and events
Student Summer employment:
- Students positions may be extended for summer (with no summer enrollment necessary) if they met the enrollment requirements for the spring semester. If you would like to hire a new student for a summer position, they will need to meet these enrollment requirements based on the position.
- Undergraduate students who graduated in the spring may continue to work through the summer if they met the spring enrollment requirements.
- To be eligible for a Graduate summer assignment, you must be enrolled in at least 3 semester credit hours during any term of the summer session.
Job Titles
Undergraduate Academic titles:
- Undergraduate Research Assistant (U0095)
- Salary range: $8.38/hr to $21.50/hr
- Semi-monthly pay, Tuition Waiver eligible
- Requirements: Student must be enrolled in at least 12 course credit hours. *
- Duties: academic research duties directly related to student’s own field of study under the supervision of a faculty member, and not related to a course.
- Combination of employment in any title at UT Austin may not exceed 20 hours per week.
*Exceptions to the 12-hour enrollment requirement is available for seniors who are on track to graduate during the current academic year and who need fewer than 12 hours per semester to graduate.
Graduate student Academic titles:
- Graduate Assistant (G0071)
- Salary range: $11.27/hr to $27.50/hr
- Semi-monthly pay, Tuition Waiver eligible
- Duties: (1) provide support to units or faculty members where the students’ roles and responsibilities are a direct application of their academic work. (2) clerical and other subordinate functions directly related to a class of a technical or professional nature.
- Graduate Research Assistant (G0090)
- Salary range: $25,368 to $79,032. See below for GRA salary rates by department.
- 12 month rate; Monthly pay, Tuition Waiver eligible; some are Tuition Reduction Benefit eligible. (see below for TRB eligibility)
- Duties: academic research duties directly related to student’s own field of study under the supervision of a faculty member, and not related to a course. Their work is usually suitable for and may be used as part of their report, thesis, or dissertation research to the extent approved by the faculty supervisor.
- Requirement: Student must be enrolled in at least 9 semester credit hours for that semester.
- Non international students:
- No more than 20 hours per week of UT Austin employment in a student job title during the student’s first two long semesters (fall/spring) as a full-time graduate student
- No more than 30 hours per week of UT Austin employment in a student job title during subsequent semesters, including summer
- Can work up to 40 hours during spring break, summer and winter break, please review full summary of work hour limits Here
- International Students:
- No more than 20 hours per week of UT Austin employment during long semesters.

Student Non Academic Titles: (May be used for Undergraduate or Graduate)
- (0074) Student Assistant
- Pay range: $7.26/hr to $12.50/hr
- (0075) Student Associate
- Pay range: $7.68/hr to $15.00/hr
- (0076) Senior Student Associate
- Pay range: $8.84/hr to $18.00/hr
- Duties: Non-academic duties only.
- Combination of employment in any title at UT Austin may not exceed 20 hours per week.
- Enrollment Requirements for Undergraduate Students who are employed in nonacademic positions: Student need to be enrolled in at least 6 course credit hours.
Other non-academic student job titles:
- (0077) Student Technician- (May be used for Undergraduate or Graduate)
- Pay range: $9.92/hr to $22.00/hr
- Duties: Academic duties only. ie. data entry and technical support
- Combination of employment in any title at UT Austin may not exceed 20 hours per week.
