ST.ART Sketching Socials

Third Thursdays

Join ST.ART Pre-College every third Thursday of the month for hour-long guided sketching sessions, led by director Amelia Fleming.

Connect with fellow educators and develop a sketching routine! Not just an opportunity to unwind and get lost in your sketchbook (or on a scrap of paper) – each month we’ll discuss different artists and styles to inspire new ideas for your classroom. All sketching prompts can be modified to use in the K12 classroom and teaching resources will be available after the session. No special materials, skills or previous knowledge needed. CPE credits available.

Sketching Prompts & Playlists

Use these prompts and tools for your own practice or with students.

Blinds Sketch by Chloe P. with cool colored pencil and ink, Intensive 2020

Whether you have 5 minutes or an hour, a sketching routine is a great way to enhance creativity and improve focus. We recommend sketching for at least 15 minutes each day. This routine is not about having a finished product and is intended to help you reflect on your process and gain new skills for your creative practice, prompting students with various drawing techniques to build on fundamental drawing and observation skills.

Supplies

Sketching is a low-risk way to experiment with materials, colors and/or techniques and few materials are needed. We recommend creating a traveling set with the following:

  • sketchbook (or scraps of paper)
  • pens (microns, ballpoint, etc.)
  • pencils and eraser
  • watercolor set and aqua brush
  • paper towel or absorbent rag
  • your favorite crayons, colored pencils, markers, chalks, tapes and more!

Playlists

Music is a great way to energize sketching and art making sessions. When possible, let your students add songs to the playlist or choose songs that enhance a sketch prompt or project.
Here’s few of our favorite Spotify playlists:

ST.ART Intensive 2020, student picks (90 min)
Scribble Songs, for paced sketching (19 min)
Gold Instrumental Beats (180 min)
