ST.ART Intensive
June 26 – July 23, 2022
Step towards your creative future with UT Austin’s four–week Art + Design Intensive.
Immerse yourself in the creative process with daily classes in core 2D and 3D alongside focused concentrations of your choice designed to expand your art practice, grow your portfolio and help you prepare for college and beyond. Our faculty of practicing artists and educators guide students through new (and sometimes untraditional!) materials and processes with projects that challenge students to listen and develop their own voice. ST.ART Intensive isn’t an opportunity to perfect traditional skills, it’s an open door for you to discover your own style and voice as an artist.

Academics
ST.ART Intensive classes are designed for students to experiment with new and traditional materials, techniques and equipment. Students participate in studio sessions Monday-Thursday and Fridays are reserved for independent studio time, ST.ART Artist-in-Residence sessions and community critiques. Instructors will be available for office hours throughout the program for students to receive feedback and guidance on in-progress works. Students will work to complete 2-5 artworks during the program, including a mini-series in their chosen concentration media.
Core
Participants will develop core technical skills, and prior experience with each medium is not necessary. Each project explores a fundamental idea about visual organization, space and time that will benefit all forms of artistic practice. The Core class is divided into sections, highlighting both 2D and 3D processes.
Concentrations
Students further develop skills and generate new artworks in one area of focus through concentration studio sessions. Instructors guide students in new techniques and offer material demonstrations to lead students in personal and collaborative projects. Students will have the opportunity to work independently and develop artworks that further explore their chosen concentration and personal interests with the guidance of instructors and peers. Students select a concentration to focus on throughout the program.

ST.ART Artist-in-Residence
The ST.ART Artist-in-Residence program exposes students to career possibilities through regular interactions with local artists, designers, historians, curators and more. Collaborating with ST.ART Artist Residents, students gain insight into the process, style, methods and life of a range of arts careers. Each summer the program will select up to four Austin–area creatives to highlight the many possibilities of pursuing arts education and a career in art + design. Students will learn about a resident’s process during the month long program, including techniques for making, project development, business practices and more.
ST.ART Artist Residents are offered a studio space in the Department of Art & Art History’s Art Building, gaining access to studios and labs. Residents will be generating new works during the summer months and lead high school students in weekly sessions throughout the ST.ART Intensive. Our 2022 resident(s) will be announced in spring 2022. Learn more about the ST.ART Artist-in-Residence program.
College Prep
Each element of the ST.ART Intensive supports students as they prepare to apply for college. Studio Sessions (aka classes) guide students through the fundamentals of Art + Design to generate new artworks for the admissions portfolio. Throughout the summer students will engage in conversations about the admissions process (from artist statements to resumes to short answers and more) with Admissions Coordinators from the UT Austin College of Fine Arts. At the end of the summer, parents and guardians will be invited to a Q&A session for an opportunity to have their questions answered as well!
As we welcome participating students to apply for undergraduate admission with UT Austin’s Department of Art & Art History and/or School of Design and Creative Technologies, our pre-college program gives students the tools and support to apply at any college or university throughout the United States and beyond.
Final Exhibition
All students will showcase at least one artwork created during the summer in the final exhibition, hosted by UT Austin’s Visual Arts Center or Halls & Walls Gallery. Friends, families and the Austin community will be invited to join in celebration at an opening event!
