WORKSHOP: New Ideas
Friday, November 22nd from 1-2pm in RLP 3.214F. 
We hope that your semester is winding down nicely! Based on your request during our first meeting in September, R&E will host a new ideas workshop over light refreshments.
The purpose of this workshop is to bring, give, and/or receive answers to questions regarding choosing literature, operationalizing, and strengthening or troubleshooting methods and analysis for seminar papers and journal articles. For those who plan on bringing a question, be prepared to provide about 5-minutes’ worth of context and question to then receive about 5-minutes’ worth of feedback.

WORKSHOP: Thinking Race
December 5th from 11:00-12:30 in the Ethnography Lab RLP 3.214F.
We are happy to announce the second annual “Think Race” event. Think Race is a collaborative event for R&E members to present their work and get feedback. Each participant will have five minutes to present on new research ideas or emerging knowledge from a current project. At the end, R&E members will vote to choose one proposal to receive a $150 research award.
Please join us, even if you do not present, to support our participants, hear about their work, and share your feedback. Please let us know by 11/30/19 if would like to present your work.  Intention to participate can be sent by email to Ilya Slavinski, ilya.slavinski@utexas.edu, Kara Takasaki, kara.takasaki@utexas.edu. or Cassie Knaff, cmarieknaff@utexas.edu.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: ThinkRace Extended Abstract Competition

Due: May 5, 2019 to Michael Schmidt

We write to invite you to submit abstracts to our first ever ThinkRace Extended Abstract Competition where working group members working in the areas of race and ethnicity can submit extended abstracts of a maximum of three pages that outline developing projects or research proposals. Based on a pre-structured rubric and blind review, three abstracts will be chosen to receive an award towards fieldwork or conference presentations.

First place will receive $600, second place $500, and third place $400.

To participate please submit your abstracts by e-mail to Michael Schmidt by 05/08/2019. Your identifying information will then be removed and sent along to the student coordinators. Coordinators will narrow down finalists and send them along to a panel of faculty members who will vote on the winners. Winners will be asked to present their research at the first event of the Fall 2019 semester. Thank you and good luck!

ThinkRace Research Competition Winners

We are excited to announce the winners of the first ThinkRace Research Abstract Competition. Special congratulations to: Faith Deckard First place ($600), Cassandra Knaff Second place ($500), and Shannon Malone Third place ($400). We look forward to hosting the winners in a R&E event this fall where they will showcase their work.
Competition winners were selected through a blind review by a three out-of-department faculty member committee consisting of Dr. Eric Tang, Dr. Simone Browne, and Dr. Marcelo Paixão. Thank you again to everyone who participated in the competition!

Greetings! Our October meeting will feature a discussion of Professor Matthew W. Hughey’s work in his book, White Bound: Nationalists, Antiracists, and the Shared Meanings of Race, where he explores white racial identity across progressive and neoconservative movements.
