Martha Newman recently published Cistercian Stories for Nuns and Monks: The Sacramental Imagination of Engelhard of Langheim. Quan Gan, a graduate student working with Newman, asks her about the book, the research and writing process, and some of the most interesting anecdotes and takeaway.
Martha Newman is Associate Professor of History and Religious Studies. Her research focuses primarily on medieval Christian monasticism, especially monastic miracle collections, monastic attitudes toward women and the poor, and religious conceptions of labor.
Quan Gan 甘佺 is a PhD student in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Texas who focuses on comparative social history in 9th-14th century Eurasia. His current interest research is on Christian and Buddhist monasteries.
