Here is the preliminary program for SALSA XXIX. Please note that it may still be subject to minor changes. See you next week in Austin!
Submission decisions
All decision notifications for SALSA XXIX were sent out last month! We received many excellent abstracts, so decisions were a challenge. Congratulations to all the presenters. If you have not yet confirmed your attendance, please do so by emailing salsa.austin.tx@gmail.com within the next few days!
Thank you for your amazing submissions, and we look forward to seeing you all in Austin!
Submission Deadline Extended
The deadline for submitting your SALSA 2025 Abstracts has been extended until Wednesday, November 13th, to allow for additional interested parties to participate.
Any submissions received past the extended deadline will not be considered.
Responses are expected to be sent out in December.
Thanks and we look forward to reading your work,
SALSA Chair
SALSA XXIX
SALSA is back, back, back again! We are excited to announce that following last year’s successful conference after our three-year-COVID-hiatus, the Symposium About Language and Society in Austin will be taking place on January 17 & 18, 2025. Continuing in our new home of Linguistic Anthropology, the organizing committee looks forward to welcoming scholars on language and society back to Austin for an engaging conference and hopefully even more engaging conversation. The Call for Papers went life starting in late-September, with papers accepted through November 5, 2023.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Erin Debenport (University of California, Los Angeles), who will be presenting their wonderful work!
We look forward to seeing y’all in Austin!

SALSA is one week away!
Decisions, decisions…
We’d like to thank each and every one of you who submitted an abstract for SALSA 2024! Because of you, this was the most abstracts the conference has ever received!
However, this made our decision process much harder, especially as the scope of the conference will be smaller than previous years.
All submissions should have been responded to by now with a decision.
For those of you who have been accepted to present at SALSA, we look forward to seeing you in Austin in a few weeks.
For those of you who we could not accommodate this year, we hope you will consider submitting your work to SALSA in the future.
We thoroughly enjoyed reading every single one of your abstracts and are deeply excited to be a part of a community producing such important work on Language and its role in Society.

SALSA XXVIII
SALSA is back y’all! We are excited to announce that after three years of COVID-19 related cancellations, the Symposium About Language and Society in Austin will be taking place on January 19 & 20, 2024. With a new home in Linguistic Anthropology, the organizing committee looks forward to welcoming scholars on language and society back to Austin for an engaging conference and hopefully even more engaging conversation. The Call for Papers will be live starting in mid-September, with papers accepted through November 1, 2023.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Tulio Bermúdez Mejía (University of Chicago), who will be presenting their work on Speech play in trans and queer Latinx communities. As a UT Austin PhD alumnus and a former SALSA Organizing Committee member, we are especially excited to welcome Dr. Bermúdez Mejía back!
We look forward to seeing y’all in Austin!
