There are many advantages to participating in Sociology Honors. It’s highly recommended if you’re planning on going to grad school, law school, med school or some other professional school. If you’re considering one of these post-bachelor’s programs, but haven’t made up your mind, Honors will give you a taste of what it’s like to conduct independent research. You can decide as an undergraduate whether you like it or not. If you’re planning on going to work after graduation, Sociology Honors will look very good on your resume.
The Sociology Honors Program is open to majors who have completed at least 60 hours of coursework with a Sociology GPA of at least 3.5 and an overall GPA of at least 3.0. You must have completed Soc 302 (Intro Soc) and Soc 317L (Statistics) prior to entering the program. You are encouraged to have completed Soc 317M (Research Methods) and Soc 379 (Theory), but one or both can be taken during your first semester. They must be completed not later than your first semester.
Soc 679HA and Soc 679HB, the 6 required hours of Honors coursework, will count toward the 27 hours of Sociology coursework required for the major.
Applications can be submitted to Debbie Rothschild (RLP 1.216) or directly to Dr. Penny Green (RLP 3.602). Applications can be downloaded at: https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/sociology/undergraduate/honors.php
