Eric Tang, Director of the Center for Asian American Studies and Associate Professor, African and African Diaspora Studies Department, UT Austin. Eric’s talk will be titled: Outlier: Austin’s declining African-American population (an update).
In 2014, the Institute of Urban Policy Research and Analysis (IUPRA) produced a brief entitled, “Outlier: The Case of Austin’s Declining African-American Population.” It showed that between 2000 and 2010 Austin was the only major growing city in America to see a simultaneous decline in its African-American population. No other city in America with over 10 percent population growth saw any decline in African Americans save for the capital of the state of Texas. This presentation follows up on the original “Outlier” study with an analysis of 2020 Census data.
