Directions to Cory and Sam’s at Llano
Llano directions:
-
- From Austin, take Loop 1 / Mopac south to Southwest Parkway, go right/ west
- At the intersection of Southwest Parkway and Rt. 71 go right / west
- Go approximately 70 miles to the town of Llano, to the intersection of 71 with Highway 16. There is a convenience store just as you come into town on the left, and larger grocery stores in town. There are several hotels and B&Bs in town.
- From the intersection of 16 and 71, go left / south for just a short way, about 1/8th mile / 250 meters.
- Turn right / west on Prairie Mountain Highway — FM 2323 — and go 17.0 miles
[Scenic notes: When the light is right one can see Enchanted Rock from this road (to the left, at about 13 miles out). Bull-nose Mountain, with one rounded peak is also to the left. Beginning about 14 miles from Llano look for the large mesa of House Mountain to the right-center of the highway. Our place is just to the north / right of House Mountain.] - At 17 miles from intersection of highways 16 and 71, there is a gravel road to the right marked for both 109 and 110. There is also a sign for the Cuvelier Ranch. Turn right onto the gravel county road 110 / 109.
- Very soon, about 1/4th mile from the turnoff from the blacktop road, turn right on another gravel road marked 109.
- Go about 5.1 miles on this gravel road, crossing little creeks and cattle guards, until you cross a larger creek (Hickory Creek) on a cement and granite low-water crossing. The creek is full of granite boulders and granite sand, and you cross via two cement pads winding between them. There are no markings for water level, so be very cautious if the water looks high. In wet weather the granite gravel roads can also be very soupy and slick.
- Here’s a Google Maps pin for the location of the gate
To the house
- Once across Hickory Creek, go up the hill about 1/2 mile. Just 10 meters beyond the first cattle guard, our gate is on the left. I will have given you the combination to the lock and once you enter that you must push the padlock U-bolt into the lock to release it. Please shut the gate behind you and follow the gravel track around to the back of the house.
Alternate route:
From Llano you can also go right in to the square at the center of town and then turn left on Highway 152, just north of the courthouse. About 18 miles out, just before the little town of Castell, turn left on County Road 105. Follow 105 for about 5 miles until it meets 109 right at Moseley’s hunting camp. Head south on 109 and our gate is just before the first cattle guard, on the right. It’s within sight of the 105/109 intersection. This route has more paved roads and fewer low water crossings. It’s a little better in rainy weather.

To the campsite:
- Once across Hickory Creek, climb the hill and take the first little road to the left. It’s about 1/8th mile / 250 meters from the creek and crosses a little culvert. There is a sign for the “Wilson Quarry” (our neighbor, not us, but the sign still works) pointing to the left. Wind along this road about 1/2 mile over a little creek and through granite outcrops. The gravel road takes a 90-degree left turn just at our gate which has a 6-bar metal gate, chain, and combination lock. Call me for the code.
- Once through the gate make a hard right turn and go almost parallel to the way you just came when you came up the gravel road. Follow the tracks past granite blocks, past the cement-block shed, and on along the track to the east. This brings you, we hope, to our camp, with picnic table, campbox,
and outhouse.
