New Zoom Feature! Sharing Slides from the Main Room in Breakout Rooms

This is really exciting, y’all!

Zoom version 5.7.4 has a brand new feature that allows you, as the host, to share your screen with the participants in your breakout rooms. In previous versions, the only way for you to communicate with a breakout room in Zoom was to join that room OR to broadcast a message to all.

Now, with just about two clicks, you can share content – such as a slide- with the screens in ALL the breakout rooms. You can also share your whiteboard and even your iPad, iPhone, or a second camera.

Here’s a 3-minute video of me demo-ing how to do this. It seems the documentation is not up to date yet on Zoom. This is really hot of the presses.

A few things to note: You cannot share music or your video. You CAN share a youtube video through your browser, though it will not have sound.

Customizing participant windows in Zoom

Ever wished you could reorder to the Zoom participant windows instead of having all participants showing up in random order? Or, wish you could see which students raised their hands and in what order in Zoom? In this quick Take5 video, I walk through how to do both actions. 

I have used these features to help identify the order of students to call on during presentations and communicate to students that order in a visual format. If you prefer to read how to use these features, go to the section Customizing the Video Order on this page from Zoom.

Showing your Video in front of Slide Presentation in Zoom

In this short video, I will show you how to share a video of yourself in front of your slide presentation in Zoom. This feature works with PowerPoint or Keynote and is native to Zoom. Make sure your Zoom app is up to date before you try this out, and if you prefer a written version, see this Zoom blog post.

Why would you want to do this from a pedagogical perspective? Teaching presence is sometimes hard to capture online, especially with Zoom when showing slides.

Live Auto-captioning Now Available in UT Austin Zoom

I learned from my friend Daniel Jacobs, the UT Austin captioning manager, that live auto-transcription or captioning is now available in version 5.5.2 of Zoom. Watch this video to learn how to turn auto-transcribing or captioning on in your UT Austin Zoom account. If you prefer a quick written tutorial, check out Daniel’s instructions here.

Also, make sure that you have your settings in Zoom set to enable live transcription to show transcript on the side panel in meeting. See a quick demo here.

Please note: Although ASR transcripts are available, they should not be considered an equal/appropriate replacement for live-generated captions as an accommodation for deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) individuals. Sharing your Course Recordings with Students via Canvas

Even if you chose to automatically record your course meetings to the Cloud when you set them up in Canvas, you still need to publish those recordings for students to view. You’ll need to do that each time you teach and record the class.
