3 Tips for Encouraging High Response Rates on Course Instructor Surveys

According to the UC Berkeley Center for Teaching and Learning, faculty play a key role in determining response rates for Course Instructor Surveys. “When actively promoted and discussed with students, response rates are generally higher than those in courses with little to no instructor attention paid to them” (para 1).

Tip 1: If you are teaching online or in-person, consider conducting the CIS IN THE MIDDLE of the last class, rather than at the end of the class period. Step out OR mute yourself, and turn off your camera, and come back after an agreed-upon time. Customizing participant windows in Zoom

Ever wished you could reorder to the Zoom participant windows instead of having all participants showing up in random order? Or, wish you could see which students raised their hands and in what order in Zoom? In this quick Take5 video, I walk through how to do both actions.

Redesign Checklist for Instructional Continuity

We just lost 10+ days due to the February 2021 Winter Storm. An event such this will likely happen again in the future. Below, find a checklist to help prioritize how to redesign your syllabi and content and guide decision making during academic continuity situations.

 

Revisit the Big Ideas of the Course – Redesign activities to ensure those big ideas are met.

What are the lynchpin ideas for your course? The ideas that without which, students’ subject-matter understanding may very well fall apart?

For example, for my Design Pedagogy course here in UT’s College of Fine Arts, one of the big ideas is that all learning involves the making of memories. I want to ensure that the content we planned to address during the February 2021 Winter Storm closure that feeds that big idea is retained in some fashion.

Direct your redesign with threads to your big ideas. Eradicate items that lightly or minimally build toward big idea development. Continue Reading Redesign Checklist for Instructional Continuity

Showing your Video in front of Slide Presentation in Zoom

In this short video, I will show you how to share a video of yourself in front of your slide presentation in Zoom. This feature works with PowerPoint or Keynote and is native to Zoom. Make sure your Zoom app is up to date before you try this out, and if you prefer a written version, see this Zoom blog post.

Why would you want to do this from a pedagogical perspective? Teaching presence is sometimes hard to capture online, especially with Zoom when showing slides.

Live Auto-captioning Now Available in UT Austin Zoom

I learned from my friend Daniel Jacobs, the UT Austin captioning manager, that live auto-transcription or captioning is now available in version 5.5.2 of Zoom. Watch this video to learn how to turn auto-transcribing or captioning on in your UT Austin Zoom account. If you prefer a quick written tutorial, check out Daniel’s instructions here.

To upgrade to the latest version of Zoom, follow these instructions:

  • For CoFA Macs, go here 
  • For CoFA Windows, go here 

Also, make sure that you have your settings in Zoom set to enable live transcription to show transcript on the side panel in meeting. See a quick demo here.

Please note: Although ASR transcripts are available, they should not be considered an equal/appropriate replacement for live-generated captions as an accommodation for deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) individuals. Please contact Services for Students with Disabilities for more information if accommodations are required (Jacobs, 2021).
